So how about this for a thought experiment. 6x6 aatvs seem superior to 8x8 because on 8x8's there is no center pivot wheel and due to this all wheels drag when turning! So how about a 10 X 10 aatv with a twist, have the front two and the rear two wheels run 25mm ( an inch for the unmetricated)off the ground so you get the 6 x6 turning ease on hard ground but in the soft stuff 10 x 10 ability. drop in an air cooled 4 cyclinder road bike engine and a dual diff drive for real all wheel drive and hey presto! |

HEY EUGENE: to my knowledge this smaller tire aproach on front-rear axle should work.......on the motorcycle engine you will keep the follow inconveniences: a) how to exchange heat (after all air cooled motorcycle engine (except from piaggio or rockon) are cooled via ambiance air when they travel...inside the machinery deck of your 10 x 10 will be a furnace!!! b) motorcicle engine are attached to mechanical gear so how to control the action??? c) motorcycle engine offer low torque value below 4000 rpm.. what about consider an air cooled vw engine fitted with automatic tranny (take out from combi)???...of course that is a mess to built an hot air duct below the opposed 4 engine but very light and reliable with lower center of gravity and easier if you built up the bottom of the 10 x10 aatv after install on frame the engine-tranny that could be a nice bouncing rig!!! instead of a fancy dual diff it's possible to use the wv standard configuration with 2 abs disk brake caliper with modified electronic control module to act as an ass (anti spin system)that way it's possible to keep "true traction" with single stick....... |

Hi Isaac, I think the wheels should be the same size just have the the front and rear axles raised a bit, as different size tyres add problems, two spares? different drive rate to get the same on the ground speed etc. I like the VW idea but 40-60 Hp is no match for 100+ Hp from a road bike engine Hp = torque X rpm so a low torque engine just is geared to rev higher. Maybe a small DOHC EFI car engine with auto. I like the fancy dual diff setup it is the most effiecient no wasted Hp in steering brakes. Re control use a shaft drive bike engine straight into dual diff drive, drive hydraulic pump off of the shaft and use a small Hyd motor as steering input to dual diff drive then controlls become throtle, gear selector, clutch( or not if auto), brake and 1 small hydralic valve for steering. If you use the Small car engine and auto the hydraulic power source can come from the auto fluid pump most have ample capacity to spare. |
