We've had some great weather here in Missouri and it was a great time to take a test drive with the 24" tires. Today I put a set of 24" Argo Frontier tires on an 18hp Max II. First thing I noticed is these tires are lighter weight than the 22" Rawhides. Most people won't know that, they'll only know how smooth these tires allow your 6x6 to ride. The 24" tires easily provide the best ride I've ever had in a Max. The real test is water speed since I don't like how slow the 22" Rawhide IIIs are. I drove into the lake and the speed increase was great. These 24" tires provide the water speed of the 21" Rawhide, the mud traction of the 22" Rawhide IIIs, and more ground clearance than either can offer. It moves through the water really well, although it could be maybe 1mph slower than the Frontier (it really flies). These tires are exactly what the Max needs. Check out the pictures and my videos! Thanks Brandon Awesome Video. Man I can’t believe the water speed. I went to the Sport Travel Show in Erie Pa and met Dan Lionetti from Leos. He was pretty cool and loves his Frontier too. I was amazed at how big the tire on the Avenger looks compared to the Frontier tire. I took allot of pics for comparison etc. I would really like to see Argo do something similar on the Avenger now like a 26” 12” wide Frontier style soft tire. That would be sweeeeeeet! I just think when the tire is the suspension we need the best we can get. |

Pretty cool Brandon. People who never rode on runamuks don't know how nice a ride can be.. we just wanted a bigger version, and here it is. |

I'd love to try them on mine. Mostlikely wait until my tread wear down before i think about other kind of tire. Maybe they'll have bigger ones by then. |

He had mentioned approaching them about getting tires designed but I don't recall if he said Carlisle makes the Frontier tires. It would be nice if they were available from the manufacturer dealer network. I doubt they will be for a while. I'd expect Argo to have some exclusive agreement with who ever makes them. But if they do so well either the manufacturer or a smaller specialty company could come up with something. |

The tires are made by Carlisle. My distributor said he was going to try to buy the tires direct. I will let you know if he has any luck but I really doubt it. I am going to talk to RI and see if they have any objections to me selling these 24" Argo tires on new Maxs. They give the passengers a softer ride and that soft ride also means less wear and tear on the drivetrain. Most importantly, I notice better traction in slippery conditions. I drove the Frontier up some really steep hills covered in about 6" of snow. It goes up easily. I did the same with my '01 Max II with 21" Rawhides and had lots of difficulty. First, they wouldn't keep the vehicle on the path and caused me to have to correct by disenguaging one side. The Frontier with those 24" tires didn't get off course. One hill was very steep and long and the Max II wouldn't go up. I spun the vehicle around at the bottom of the hill and went up in reverse. It was then no problem at all. The Frontier tires seem to give the excellent water speed of the backwards tire, while still keeping the mud traction you'd get from a forward mounted tire. |

Yes the tires are Carlisle and say that right on them. I have always liked Carlisle tires on Commercial Mowers and now almost wont use anything but. I have some close up pics and comparison to Avenger 26 rawhide 3. I wouldn’t expect to buy the tires direct as I know if I had to put the money up for them would require a contract to make something off my investment. I would just buy them from an Argo Dealer if I had to with there beaded rims. When you consider a 30 year tire life like floatation’s those tires cost you .35 cents a year at 125.00 a piece. And I very much doubt anybody’s going to wear those raw hide treads down bald. So I would upgrade and sell the old tires on ebay to someone who wants or can use them. Carlisle probably put some good rubber in this tire and you get what you pay for just like the old snowmobile tracks held up virtually forever. It you keep tires inflated and not sun baked I think you will be happy with the extra expense for allot of years. And thanks Brandon for putting in the time on those videos I would love to see the frontier in water. I would definitely consider buying tires from a dealer that has put effort in with testing and picture results etc. |

Thanks for the post, Brandon. I was skeptical about the 24" tires on a Max II, but you have made a believer out of me. If only these 24s would fit on the Max II K-rim... |

Gonna throw a little cool water on a hot subject! Don't forget that the frontier tire is only ten inches wide. If flotation is important, an eleven inch wide tire is 10% wider than a ten inch tire and a 12 inch wide tire is 20% wider than a ten inch tire. These number are important when figuring PSI on the ground. If you are needing traction and can reach the bottom wherever you go, go to a narrower tire, but realize that in the soft stuff you will pay for it. I want a 14" or 15" wide tire with the no gap tread. When watching the video, with the tires so close together it looks like no water between the front and middle tire or the middle and the back tire. This appears to eliminate the drag of those tires pulling and pushing water at the same time. I was surprised that it rode so low in the water (less support from the narrower tire maybe?). Certainly appeared to be moving right along. Hey Brandon, when you are testing tires, why don't you put three of one kind on one side and three of another kind on the other side? When in the mud or water, you should not be able to go straight if one tire is better than the other. If you ever get a chance, I sure would like to see a picture of a frontier tire side by side with the 22" rawhide and the 26" Terra Grip to be able to see the height and width differences. |

I will probably make a video of the Frontier swimming here real soon. It's one of the very few amphibs that is actually fast and fun to have in the water... and it doesn't leak! It looks like I will be setting up a 6x6 ride in Rockport, Illinois soon. I'll be riding a Frontier for all to see and test drive. Fred, I was worried about the 10" wide tires at first also. What it comes down to is the fact that what it looks like on paper doesn't matter when the rubber meets the trail. With such low pressure, I think they smash out to at least 11" wide anyway. Remember the Rawhides are 11" but are much harder and won't flex like the 24" tire. Either that or the Argo tread pattern totally makes up for the narrow tire. I have seen absolutely no downfalls of this tire and the Frontier is a beast like I've never seen. Bud, these tires will work fine on k-rims. Since you bought your Max from me and want to give the Argo tires the ultimate test, I'll give you a great deal on them. If you really want to do it just call or email me. |

That max was different looking in the water, high in the front-low in the back. I bet it was level without power, maybe less throttle the thing stays more level and still swims good? Those tires do sling the water, on the frontier it really geysers water everywhere. Brandon's max looked like it was pushing water under the front and pulling it out from under the back. I turned my four front tires around because the front would sink down when throttle applied. Now it raises up instead. A guy could spend a lot of time figuring out how spinning tires interact with water. |

Brandon,Rockport is now closed and has new owners(Hunting Lodge). Tom and Debbie have now opened a park in Hannibal,Called Hannibal Rocks. They allow only 4x4 jeeps and suv vehicles, side by side ATV's with a rollcage and belts. No dirt bikes,4-wheelers,or anything without a cage.It has been excellent with my jeep but havent taken the Argo yet. |

Hey Eddie good to see a post from you even if it is to give bad news. Would you guys like to set up a Ride at Little Egypt Off-road in marion, IL. There is a daily fee and they require a registration decal from IL or another state, and helmets. But after that it is good riding. I've been going there about every other day. Yesterday I got stuck for about an hour on a new trail. |

Jerry, how does a person get a reg. decal to ride at Little Egypt? It might be difficult to set up a ride there with that requirement. Eddie, I knew there were changes but had no idea it was pretty much closed up. I checked out their website and the details are on there. Looks like we can ride there with a roll cage. Funny to see the four wheelers get outlawed for once, it's usually us. Still very few people have cages on their machines. I just wonder if our Max II or Argo 6x6 roll BARS would pass. I will try to work out something else. Are the good times really over for good? |

The decal is good for a year and a person can buy them at the entrance when the admission fee and waiver is completed. There is also a one day decal. The annual is good from April 1 to march 30. I checked on them last month and the new ones were not in. The prices are $11 in state resident, $18 out of state resident, $6 single day pass. This has been in effect since 1997 in Illinois. If the OHV area has been funded by the state then the OHV decal is required. Most places honor the decal from other states. The money from the decal is used to open new areas and keep the current ones open. Little Egypt Off Road and Williams Hill Pass in Southern Illinois require them. |

Jerry,I would try to make a ride at LEORP if I would be off that weekend. There are so few organized rides anymore I have concentrated my off-roading efforts to my Jeep.We have monthly meetings and some sort of activity in between trailrides.I cant seem to even get interested in a bigger ride like Ledges because of the long drive, warmer weather, etc. Brandon,It was a zoning issue for Tom and Debbie,if you have a cage and belts you are ok.It is a great park and still somewhat local for me, so if you wanted to try to ride let me know.I just heard of a park around Kirksville that a few Jeepers went to and said it was a mudfest,it is open to any and all vehicles and is only like 5 or 10 bucks to ride.I will try to get more info and will let you know about it.(maybe you have know about it.)Back a few years ago I would eagerly try to make every ride there was,the Attica ride was almost cancelled because of the 911 tragedy.Still we had an excellent turnout and I saw the dedication of tru 6x6 'ers and americans with all the flags on the machines.I would say that was the best ride I have ever participated in.Maybe we can get some interest and get something like that going again.Post was a little longer than usual, but I felt like typing this warm sunny Saturday morning. |

Eddie when would be good for you? I have the same problem with scheduling. I am off on Sunday and Monday and with enough advance notice can get off on Saturday. Since I am a member at LEOR I have keys to the place and we can ride and camp there during the week as long as we get the fee collected and waiver signed. I normally go there during the week to avoid the weekend crowd of quads and motorcycles. |

I received this from Carlisle today: Hi Jerry, Right now Carlisle has no plans to produce this tire Under the CARLISLE label. Thanks Rhett Turpin Product Manager ATV/Skid Steer Carlisle Tire & Wheel Company 23 Windham Blvd. Aiken, SC 29805 Ph. 803/642-9817 Fx. 803/643-2919 So for now it looks like the only way to get the tire is from an Argo Dealer. Good for Argo for going out and getting this tire designed. |

On the subject of big tires on a maxII, I'll post this here as entertainment, without intending to take away from the Frontier tire discussion too much. Tory Gardner e mailed me with the following: ---------------- Here's my greatest and latest project. I have modified my Black Max to run 25 inch Rawhide ATT tires. What do you think. I run them completely flat and I have yet to bust a bead with them. These tires seem to wrap around every thing and handle great at high speed over rough terrain. Before you ask "no the 25 inch tires will not fit on a stock MAX 2. I had to heat the fender wells to gain clearance for the front 4 tires but I managed to make it look factory. Matt's rims are awesome and I think he should offer them as an after market upgrade to any one interested. I have also added the internal muffler to gain clearance for the rear left tire. ----------------

Hey Roger! Thanks for posting pictures of my max! I'll get the hang of down sizing my photo's sooner or later. Any ways I all ready have plans to go to a little wider tire just for kicks. I have a set of 25x13x9's two ply tires I bought for my Argo BigFoot which I should be able put on soon. I'm just waiting on UPS to show up with another set of Matt's trick bead lock rims. These things are even better than K-Rims at least when they are matched with the 25x11x9 Rawhide ATT's. I have never been able to run my 22 inch rawhides flat with out taking a chance of debeading them. Flat as in no air at all for max traction and ride. |

Tom,good for you buddy. I want to see the pictures too. The Maxii looks great in the water with those tires on Brandon Price's video. The same Max iv has won the water race at Olean N.Y. every year since Adam and Eve. (Tim Mudbuster). This year there will be a lot of us there with cameras. You may be able to Make Tim work for his trophy. You are pretty hard on R.I. about their optional 26" tire. I have been wearing a set for nearly 4 years now (so have you for a year that I know of), Because the rim is 12" instead of 8 or 9" there is less side wall height and less air volume--so more weight and stiffer ride, But I have few flats,I only lost a bead once, at Olean under duress, and till now at least they are the fastest tires on the water by a big margin. (That may no longer be true Tom and if you can prove it ,I will take the picture. OLEAN N.Y. is just One day less than a month from now!!!!! I may have a new Avenger by then. W. Philip Cox |

Ok, I have an obvious question. If I buy the kids a 18-23hp MAX II , w/ a track prep kit installed, and put 24" Frontier tires on it, how will that affect me putting tracks on the machine? I mean you can run tracks directly on the Frontier with them on it, and you can run tracks on the 8x8 650, or Avenger w/ 24" tires on them. So, can you run MAX tracks over the 24" tires? you know me, I'm going to ask alot of questions. |

The 21 raw hides are 11 inches wide,so the ri track is made for this, and you need all of that body clearance.I whish RI would make a max 2 with 24 and that you can just drive on to the tracks.I do not like playing the tire changing game with my buffalo (26 to 21).Does any one have info and or pic,of there argo frontier running there tracks in the deep snow.I would like to be able to go in fresh un groomed snow ,and up small hills too.Can the frontier do that? |

I have a MAX video from that Wyocena dealership, it has Max's driving across what looks like regular snow, they stop and the guy jumps off the Max II, and the guy lands in snow up to his chest. It is a trip! My 10 year old saw that and just freaked out, it was amazing to him. He still watches it. Amazing what a real difference tracks makes. |
