Today we planned to haul some wood for ourselves and to sell. The wood was at the bottom of a hill near a lake. Before I got there, they had a new Honda Foreman 450 4x4 to pull the wood trailer. He drove down to the bottom of the hill and loaded the trailer full of wood. It was then time to take the wood up to the house. The Honda takes off up that hill and just sits there and spins. He backs down and they go get another Honda 300 to help pull. They hook them together and still no luck. Both quads sit there helplessly spinning at the bottom of the hill. They call me at about 10am and say they need help. In other words, it is going to take a real ATV to get the job done. I said I would load up my Max and bring it over.
I get there about a half hour later and see them still down there trying to get out. They were within the first 10 feet of the hill and going no where, when the hill is at least 100 feet to the top. I unload the Max and drive down there. They unhooked the first quad. I said I would just hook that strap onto my Max and drag the Honda 4x4 and wood out at the same time. They did not think that was possible but I hooked it up anyway.
Here goes the big Max off and running. I hit that hill and it kept going easily with about 1/2 throttle. Max was moving on with power and traction to spare. I made it to the top of the hill without spinning a wheel. Max easily did the job two quads couldn't even handle. We hooked the trailer to the hitch of the Max and hauled four more loads up the hill. The 6x6 proves the be the superior ATV once again.

Brandon,
I enjoyed that story. Much of the time, folks who don't know what a 6-wheeler is, or only know of the older "classic" models (with the milk jug-thin bodies and scrawy axles) simply refuse to believe claims made regarding the performance and capabilities of current machines. It's simpler to keep your mouth shut and let your 6x6 do the talking for you. When you've finished doing what they cannot (and in many cases could NEVER do), you can usually tell by that awed look on their faces and/or the sudden silence after seeing our little buggies "do the impossible," that all doubts have been erased!

Guys,
The doubting folks usually find out real quick what a 6 wheeler can do. It also depends on the person using the machine also. if they are experienced a lot can be done with a 6. |

Absolutely true Pete!
I have seen top machines flounder with a rookie at the helm, and seen ancient japlopies whiz through like nothing when a steady hand is behind the sticks. In spite of the 3-wheel vs. 6-wheel stuff, there were a LOT of folks in Argos getting stuck in the soup at Humphrey '99. In the same scene on the Jamboree video you see a fellow with a cowboy hat on in a red Argo traverse that same patch of slop and he doesn't even slow down! As the videographer comments, the guy dosen't even lose the ash off the end of his cigarette. Similar happenings took place with MAXes as well. Much was kids driving, but a fair share of greenhorn adults were high & dry, too.
The machine is a part of the equation yes, but experience can often be even more important in the long run. Especially when the going gets ugly! RIDE ON!!! |
