I just purchased a 97' Max IV thanks to the valuable input on this forum. Can the motor cover be upgraded to the current style and if so is there any other work required? Does this require relocating the engine? Who would sell a current style motor cover?

The covers on the old and new (late 2000) Max IVs do not interchange. With the the back seat moved back, the dimension form the back of the machine to the back seat is less.

Thanks Fred. Are you saying the newer models have the rear seat moved back...if so, what would prevent moving the seat back on my 97' model?

Nothing. You would need a new back seat floor pan and I'm not sure if the new style engine cover would fit exactly, but I'm sure you could figure it out. If I were to do that, I would have the new engine cover on hand when I went to reposition the seat. Call RI and they will give you pricing on both pieces and tell you for sure if it will work.

Fred,
Are you aware of any other applications that use the style of wing nuts that hold the Max body section to the tub? Is it advisable to use a small lock washer over the bolt before installing the wing nut? After some bouncing along, my wing nuts get loose - I lost one this way. Just need to pick up a few spares and wonder where else I can find this style nut.

Bill,
I am not aware of any other application that uses Max II type wing nuts. I suppose you could weld a washer to a wing nut and you would have everything but the grooves. You could use a lock washer, but it will ding up the plastic and the nut will not fit snug up against the plastic (might get some warpage). Wing nuts are 90 cents each and you can buy them direct from the factory 1(800) 255-2511.

I use a set of vise grips set closed so they just barely don't touch the wings and hold it close to the body (over the base of the wing nut) to snug down the wing nuts. If you use a pair of pliers up on the wings, you will break them off - I have broken them off with my fingers. The grooves in the washer are suppose to keep them snug, but they can come loose. I make it a habit (and advise my customers) to check the tightness for a few days after opening up the body. The inner seal between the top and bottom of the body compresses as it sits and the nuts get loose. You might put a little electrician's tape around the exposed threads above the nut( or even some rubber cement) to keep the nut from getting lost.

I use rubber washers, the size of the base on the wing nuts, and tighten them down like Fred said, they have not loosened up even after some heavy pounding, through the woods. They have to be a pliable type, not hard plastic.
