I have owned sport-utility quads for a long time. I still enjoy my Grizzly 660. But I think I am ready to come over from the Dark Side. I am seriously considering an 8-wheeler. I have narrowed the field of engagement down to the Argo Avenger or the Triton Predator. I know these two machines are in different price ranges. My questions revolve around maintenance. I am interested in comments on Argo Avenger chains vs Triton Predator hydraulics. Any comments from owners of these two machines? Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. |

Good questions. The chain drive system is reliable when maintained. Yes it does brake to the inside wheels in a turn. Parts are easily obtained from a dealer or from a source like a farm supply store. I have not been in the Triton so I cannot comment on it. I believe the hydraulics would be very reliable but expensive to repair. I don't know the weight of the Triton but with these ATVs weight is always a concern, less weight is better. I imagine you are going to be using it for work or hauling people or equipment to want a 8 wheeler. If you are looking at something for fun and work and don't need the extended length I would suggest the Max IV. I'm an Argo owner but if cost is an issue it is worth looking into. Also buy a new one or a well maintained used one that has been gone over in great detail. Test drive it and test the water performance and integrity of the hull. Test drive several of them and see which one you like best. Don't buy one without driving it. |

Thank You. I appreciate the comments on maintenance. That sounds logical. 'Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you'. So another question on the Skid-Steer: Do you ever find this a disadvantage? In a tricky spot, or a 'stuck' situation you are trying to back out of, do you wish you had the hydraulic system so that both sides would turn - at different speeds or in opposite directions? I hadn't thought of the weight issue: Argo = 1205lbs Predator = 2100lbs WOW I wouldn't want to get the Predator stuck in a Muskeg!! The reason for an 8-wheeler in the first place is because of use, as you indicated. I will primarily use it for moose hunting here in Alaska. As you may know, this generally consists of a fair amount of gear to get into the back-country. The animal harvested adds a lot of weight and size to the load. So the way I am figuring it ( & I could be wrong ) 2 people, gear and harvested moose comes to 1,000lbs easily. The floatation and extra space of an 8-wheeler would sure come in handy at that time. For the occaisional recreational use, I am told that the 8-wheeler rides more comfortably. When I get one, probably next summer (2006), it will be a new one. Steve Ratey |
