I hope everyone enjoyed our last ride at Deepwater off-road park, because it was our LAST RIDE. Our communist government has imposed a rule of ATVs only that are 50" wide and a seat that is straddled by the operator. I just called the park ranger in charge of the park rules and discussed our vehicles with him. He said he was sorry for the loss my favorite park but they decided to make it ATVs and dirt bikes only. I told him all about our machines and of course stayed friendly through my anger but there was no possibility of talking sense into him. It's a done deal and we're screwed. Deepwater web page showing the new rules: http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/harryst/off_road.htm |

That Su---,I hate to hear that. Our machines are more trail friendly than any othr ATV.Our chain lube, motor oil, coolant & battery acid stays in our machines. We don't rut as bad,our safety record is better and the majority are 4 strokes. We just happen to be a little heavier & wider, not to mention we trail pool(more than 1 person in the machine).Maybe it's time for some factory help! |

This is a common frustration. Other rules and difinitions get adopted and it excludes the 6x6 and 8x8 amphibious atv. I have taken mine to places with these rules and have never been denied access. It gets to the issue of letter of the law versus intent. The amphibs were not meant to be excluded with the trucks and rails and other licenseable vehicles but the description excludes us. I don't know why rules suddenly get changed without informing the public or having an open hearing but they do. Ans the simple way is to just adopt someone elses rules. We really need to get a PAC and involve the manufacturers to get some representation. |

I think they would need some input to justify proceeding with any action.Like what is the max width & weight of a ATV in your state,is your AATV currently registered? If it could meet state rules as a ATV would you register it? |

Brandon-It hurts to lose a favorite riding area, almost like losing a friend. Many of us felt that when we lost Humphrey NY (Private land, different issue). Most State and Federal agencies, including the Army Corps of Engineers use the National Forest guidelines for trail use. This keeps them relatively uniform throughout the country. When these guidelines were set up long ago,no one from the amphibious user group stood up so that the guidlines could include us. The 50" limit at Deepwater was always there, apparently the A.C.E. had been not enforcing it. These size and weight limits were designed to keep the Jeeps and buggies out. What is ironic is that many current quads, with aftermarket tire kits actually exceed the size limits. Here in NY no ATV regardless of shape, size, weight or color is allowed on any PUBLIC land period. We started an organization fifteen years ago to work with our state government to change that. In that time we have accomplished nothing, zero, zilch. These are the same folks we elected to represent us.I gave up and now travel (with my tourist dollars) to states that have legal ride areas,we are surrounded by them. Sorry this ran so long, but it is a real sore spot with me. My advice to you=enjoy your memories from Deepwater and find some new places to ride. The future of ATV riding is on private ride areas not areas run by our government. |

That is the most ridiculous thing that I have heard of in a long time. Its the knuckleheads on the "other" ATVs that cause the problems at Deepwater, speeding and jumping and hurting themselves and other people. I hate the friggin' government. |

We have one other place to ride and that is Rockport in Illinois. It is privately owned and even they had some recent trouble with land, but I think we're good to go on ATV riding now. Still many 6x6 riders, like Bud, are in Kansas and would have to drive much farther to ride. We need to have at least one more ride before winter. I think Rockport is worth the drive for anyone wanting to attend one great 6x6 ride. I used to drive almost 800 miles round trip with Troy and Bud Moore to ride at the Badlands... good times. While talking to the park ranger at Deepwater, some of the things he said we so stupid I almost laughed at him. I informed him that 6x6s don't damage the ground and dig ruts like a quad since we have lower ground pressure and almost no wheel spin. I said I can understand outlawing trucks and jeeps since they tear up more. He said, and I quote, "Deepwater has been strip mined and gets flooded, the land is worthless so we're not worried about that." Hahahaha... how can I reply to that one! First government person I've ever talked to that was not worried about land destruction. Then he changed gears about our amphibs going in Truman Lake. I informed him that it was legal for us to use the boat ramp and drive in the lake like a boat. He said they didn't want us riding on the shore. I told him that lake is very shallow and any quad can easily ride over 50 feet into the lake, and the quad will be on the ground for much longer than our amphibs. (Got him good there). He just said, "yeah that lake is shallow." The government got me twice in one day. I got a letter yesterday stating that my outdoor sign advertising Argo was illegal. This sign was located on my parent's property about 50 miles from me, on busy highway 19. The property has been in my family for over 100 years and I can't advertise my business! I might have to move to that free country I keep hearing about. |

I've been corresponding with a new friend in Germany who collects and restores AATVs ( www.aatv.de ). I told him about our situation here in NY, of which John Schwab is 100% right. He didn't quite understand me when I said that we really can't drive our AATVs anywhere on the trail systems anymore. He thought that in America, we could drive off the road anywhere. I tried to explain to him what the word "litigious" meant, and I think I got the point across well. I started AATV'ing just after the Humphrey event was moved to Copper Ridge, which is a truly great trail system here in New York. Copper Ridge is private land, but hopefully will not suffer the same fate as Humphrey. Once the statutes are in place, it's difficult if not impossible to alter the perception of the local and state goverments responsible for implementing them. We Attex drivers are in a somewhat deeper predicament, since the majority of our machines are two-strokes, with an even more negative appeal to those who have never sat behind the sticks. Many of us have moderately modified machines that augments this already difficult situation. What damage does a 400 pound machine (with Runamuk tires- probably exerting about 1 psi) cause on the typical trail system? We'll let our elected officials and those whom they appoint decide. Meanwhile, I'll be floating across my private terrain at 45 mph, with rarely more than two tires touching the ground at any one time, in front of an engine humming happily in the vicinity of 5000rpm (which I'll bet runs considerably cleaner than the majority of poorly-maintained oil burning quads running around). I'm going to go for a ride.... I'll be back... ~m |

Roger: I have been to Bricks. It wasn't really that great. Their big draw is the mud pit that eats trucks. As far as trails when we went there weren't really that much. I haven't seen anything on the web site about more trails either so I probably wont be going back anytime soon. |

I have not been to Bricks but Chuck has. I have spending most of my time at Little Egypt Off Road which is just east of Marion IL. It is a nice place and is Amphibious ATV friendly. There are two long strip cuts full of water and they don't mind AATVs in them. The downside is the Illinois decal is required or another sate registration decal and there is a daily use fee. They stopped all night rides a couple of months back after some people got lost for 5 or 6 hours and they had to activate an emergency search. They host a lot of events. I worked a vintage motorcycle event and it was fun. They had a scramble style race and then trials. The trials was interesting watching the older bikes trying to negotiate the obstacles. I think the oldest bike was a 1926 Indian. St. Joes State Park Missouri is still available and so is Turkey Bay. Unfortunately not as conveniet as Deepwater for that side of the country. |

It ain't over yet. I filed a formal grievance with the ACLU. The Army Corps of Engineers policy is clearly prejudicial to those whose disabilities prevent their use of a typical "sit astride" ATV. Stay tuned. |

Check out the dimensions on the Hoot "49" wide" and you sit on it. Is a John Deere Buck Ex legal? It has floor boards and with a pass through and a scooter seat. My friend has an Arctic cat 500 with oversize tires that is over 50" wide. It almost seams the intent is to keep 6x6 vehicles out of the park since most of traditional and older units are 54" to 57" wide. The weight of the vehicle should be the deciding factor if the intent is to keep trucks and jeeps out. What does not make sense is the 6x6 and larger vehicles are safer and not accepted! |

Bud, keep us updated on that process. The park ranger told me they would soon be building a fence and gate that was only 50" wide. That means if you have a quad with big mud tires, you probably won't fit through that gate. I guess that's why I've been hauling around a big log chain in the back seat of my Powerstroke. Deepwater might need some remodeling! |

Bud- My neighboring state of Pa. has ATV trails specifically designated for handicapped people. They require a special permit and are really for hunters and fisherman. Perhaps you could research how they were able to accomplish that in Pennsylvania and pursue the same course.Good luck and keep us informed. As far as changing the law, it is going be a long haul. Trail use rules in most areas in the US use guidelines drawn up by the federal government. Federal rules are part of the National Forest system which is part of the Dept. of Interior, get the picture yet?Quad owners have the benefit of the lobbying efforts of huge multi-national corporations with deep pockets and we are still losing ground (pun intended)every year. |

Bud,you might have to gather state to state info.NY also has trails set up for handicapped hunters,I myself hold one of those permits can't see a very large group that would require a 6x6 I barley see any atv's riden by handicapped hunters where I go, most likely down state NY has more.Just for your info NY law ,a ATV can't weigh more than a 1,000lbs and must not be wider than 70''.What makes things tough ,different governing bodies handle atv's, ex. PA dept of forestry handles atv's and in NY the D.M.V handles atv's and as John said add the feds. Some folks might not want to open a can of worms,if states don't include us as atv's they might re-class us as PA does(we are class 2 atv's) and allow travel on certain trails, you know the ones.....you can drive a 2-wheel drive truck on. |

That depends upon what the terrain is like and what obstacles a person can put in. It isn't huge but with a trail that utilized a lot of area it could be very nice. I still have not made it over to Harlan County KY. It is looking more and more like the place to go. |

I saw a post here about "trail pass", and checked out their site, it looked like they have a few places to ride here in NY, so I joined, I went to their trail in lake George last weekend, camped at the McKenon Mt. trailhead, nice campsite, State campsite close by also. I brought a 4x4, instead of a 6x6, and thought that the trail was to rough for me.but this wasnt the case for the younger folks.Next time I go I will bring a 6x6. |

Thanks for the info Bill, In 2004 I tried to get info from a quad dealer in the town of Onieda who sold the the passes for $50.He was rather smug even after I told him I was with a 6x6 club in weastern NY. Went on line to find more but couldn't get any info until I had a pass word that you would get after you bought the pass.So I blew the idea off. What were the trails like?Is the area of use around tug hill only?I think you need insurance, reg. and a helmet right? How long are the trails open? |

Hi Dennis, look on TrailPass.com,The location of trails you find there, however you will have to have a member number, to find the exact location.the pass will cost $75.00.Unfortunatly they donot have any in the Catskills where I live yet.trails close for the big game season I believe.Since ARGO is a sponsor, all their trails are 6x6&8x8 friendly |

I will give the Wilber Ruffcorn Farm a big thumbs up.More mud and water than you can see in a day. For 10 bucks it is a good place to ride. The creek goes for several miles and keeps getting deeper.I think it would be a good place to have a ride as he permits camping on his property, and there are so many trails. I took the Av-4 and it did alright but I have several pounds of mud to wash out of it tomorrow.Anyone wanting info just look at Illinois atv trails and it is mentioned on several sites. Eddie |

Guys, I'm also sorry to learn of the Deepwater problem. But I want to remind everyone that Hot Springs Arkansas has a great ORV park that welcomes 6x6 & 8x8 vehicles. It's the Superlift ORV, strictly private. They also have great camping, a fun city, and a nearby amusement park for families. I rode there by myself last year (Max II), and they were super nice; they said they'd love to have a group of AATVs visit. |

Good to see you out from under a rock, Henry! Just kidding, I know you're a busy guy. I do want to ride Hot Springs, later this year. Also have Grand Lake in N.E. Okla, this place will keep you entertained for a weekend. Public corps of engineers land, no rules, no fees, camping close by, one private campground on site, direct trail access. Let's get some rides together in AR, OK, KS, MO, TX. |

Rogersmith, I checked out SWMO Offrdranch's website but couldn't find a ph. number or an email addy in order to ask them about wether or not they would allow AATV's. Have you had any luck? It would be cool if they did allow our types of vehicles, but getting ahold of anyone to ask that question has been impossible. Wouldn't our type of vehicles be considered either a side by side or utility, considering the capabilities of AATV's? We have more wheels! Just wondering, and would appreciate any info you might have been able to gleam from this new park. Thanks alot, Storm |

That is not very far away from me. I could go check it out sometime. I couldn't get their rules page or schedule to load to see if they are open on weekdays. |

Tom, I cant help you with Colorado, as I am in Yukon. How did you install your tracks? Did you cut them and put on a quick link kit, or did you install them in one piece? |

I would get in touch with the state.. forest service, BLM, etc. I know Colo requires an in state atv permit or visitor permit, they may honor an out of state atv permit. They also have ORV permits for stuff people build that aren't tagable. I would guess forest roads and forest areas designated for snowmobiles or multi use. I've looked at snowmobile and jeep forums for trails and conditions, but never been up there. |

Thanks Roger I'll give that a try. Jesse-I have the new rubber tracks for the Avenger, Actually you deflate the front and rear tire, run the tracks over and then winch or "c" clamp to pull them tight and then they bolt together to join the sides, then inflate the tires. Excited to try them as had the plastic one with my old response. |

Jesse,Tom here is anoyher tip when installing tracks, did it for 6yrs. on my max 4,deflate front and rear tires as you said then wrap racheting webs around ea. tire and tighten as much as you can this reduces the O.D. of the tire start the tracks side keepers at the largest depression that is made by the web( mine are endless belts) maybe you guys could skip the link thing and never disconnect them on or off. |

That totally sucks. I am glad I live in Alaska where the state land is open to the citizens. I'll bet we have the largest number of ATV's, 4xs, and quads of any place. |
