I know all the problems with snowmobiles in Yellowstone, I would like to know if anyone has tried to ride with a group with there 6x6 or 8x8.
My wife and I ride in the central Sierra's in our Conquest and would love to ride in Yellowstone |

Brian, Currently tracked skid steers are not allowed in Yellowstone. I have been trying for the last couple of years to have the regulations changed to allow them as I think they would be a good fit with the guided concept and snow coaches they are currently allowing. It is a long slow process and really hard when only one person is addressing an issue. Part of the problem is the speed issue. They have a speed limit of 35 MPH and there are lots of miles to cross. That 30/35 MPH is the speed that needs to be traveled. Most of our machines won't do that. I think only the Max IV 900T and 950T, maybe the Max II 850T, are capable of the ground speed necessary to be a viable winter cross country machine for the Yellowstone.
I've not given up yet, but there are lots of issues. Air quality and noise emissions have to be certified by the EPA and Lawn mower engines are not being considered as in the park machines. I haven't done much lately. There is a public comment period going on now until September1,2005. Anyone who wants to can make comments at http://parkplanning.nps.gov

Thank's for the reply I guess I was just dreaming. I have snowmobiles but it would be easier to rent at the park then trailer them all the way there. |

That's the only way you can take a snowmobile into the park; rent one and go with a guided group. Individually owned and operated machines are not allowed. |

Is there anyone from or around the Breckenrigde or Keystone, Colorado area that runs there AATV in the winter snow, on trails. We're planning a trip out there around XMAS so the kids can snowboard, and the wife and I want to bring our Avenger to ride on some trails, etc. Any ideas where to look. |

You can try www.colorado4x4.org for general Colo off road info. They are jeep/truck guys with info about forest roads and rough jeep trails.
Do a search for Rabbit Ears. That's the unofficial name of an area east of Steamboat Springs.. a favorite place for snowmobilers.
You'll probably need a temp out of state permit, I think they're available at outdoor/hunting stores. |
