Hi everyone-This is my first message-
I aquired an older Amphicat and I would like to know how to find out the model and year to start.
It has a 2-speed trans. and it's red with a padded bench seat. It has 2 levers to stear with.
I have 2 SACHS engines 16hp and 24hp not installed
There is one tag upfront that I think says MAGNA and made in Michigan.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? |

JOEB, TELL US IS THERE A LOOP AT YOUR FEET?A LEVER ON THE TRANY? ITS THE REVERSE ! YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE A TWO SPEED. I found an Amphicat nameplate on the right rear frame that says MAGNA serial# 0121 made in Mississippi not Michigan.
There is a tranny lever just below the seat and a shift pattern for 2-speeds and reverse,I still don't know the year.I would like to install the electric start 24hp Sachs, is this too much HP?
Where could I get a repair and owners manual? |

well the cat got past the 8 mile mark at humphree,but the 5/16" bolts kept breaking, we knew thay would but did it anyway, we did go by a dead attex, maxII, and a terra tiger, if the bolts threw the drive tubes& axels would hold we could have fineshed the course,dorrys cat is powerd by a rupp 340cc, it's plenty strong. also rides on old type tires ( the best) we wear only defeated by the 5/16" grade 8 bolts in the 9mm hole problem! enyone got a sugestion? |

ATT DAVID: ON YOUR BOLT BREAKAGE PROBLEM GO TO HEAVY DUTY EQUIPMENT DEALER ( JAPANESE OR GERMANY ) AND PURCHASE 8MM OR BETTER TAKE OUT THE AXLE, BORE THE HOLE TO 10 MM AND UTILIZE GRADE 10.9 BOLTS...( BETTER THAN GRADE 8 SAE )THE HEAD OF BOLTS MUST SHOWS "10.9"..GOOD LUCK AND BACK TO SAFELY BOUNCE!!! |

isaac, i would try 8mm but it is a fraction smaller than 5/16" if we could easaly bore the holes i would go to 3/8", the axel is only 7/8" thick so even 3/8" may be too much, 10mm is bigger than 3/8". and lets not forget amphicat axels are hardend, still i'll take one down to the machine shop and find out wich will be cheeper , Burning the holes, Anealing and drilling + re-hardening, or macking new ones and hardening them, i hope he dosent boot me out when i ask. lol * other sugestions i have got where to custom make 9mm clevis pins, i may have to go that rout* |

Thanks for the pictures. E-mail me your address and I will send you a 3/8 bit that should drill through the axle no problem. Tell me how long a shank should be on the bolt and I'll see if I can come up with some 3/8 grade 8 for you. I think the slop in the hole is what's killing you.

i have reported tha axel s to be 7/8" wide but i just found them to be 3/4" wide, the drive tubes are 1 1/8" wide so shank should be betwean 1 1/8" &1 1/2", im shure its the slop that breaks the bolts |

If the guys here haven't got a carb for you, I would suggest posting on alt.snowmobiles.old. I would think most of the 2 stroke motors used in the older atv's would be very similar to what was used in the sleds of the same era.

I have bought a Amphicat. Not sure on model but I bleieve it is an ealrier one. I need the coil, points and condensor for the SACHS engine. ANy sources,P/N's?

I would suggest that you check with your local smowmobile shop as that engine was used in a number of sleds. Or on the web at any of the snowmobile parts sites. |

I keep bending the axels on my cat. I made them from cold roll and It just want hold up. Any suggestions would be great. thx Rick. |

your first problem is that the origional's were hardened! Cold rolled is great to work with but is too soft to use as axles. So I would suggest that you find a shop in your area that does hardening of steel. You may also try to find some hardened shafting and make then out of it. I will work very hard though but it can be done. |

What do I have? All I can say is that it has a JLO motor and a T20 Tranny. It's all there and I spent a whopping 20 bucks at a farm auction. I know of another that is setting near by and might be a sister to the one I just scored. Any help or advice would be appreciated. |

Having owned more Amphicats than i can count over the last 18 years i have never found a model# 500126 this was a unique model, it had a 8 hp Briggs engine recoil start only the body was red on top and white on the bottom no headlights, it was a 2 speed model very simple construction, i wonder if anyone out there has one of these models, i have a parts and owners manual for this machine i may post them on my site sometime after the first of the year, just thought i would throw a new topic in the conversation.

Just purchased a amphicat. this one is complete less engine. Wondering what model it is?? It has a two speed trany and the exhaust exits on the right side. Also looks like the original color was red.Would a two cylinder snowmobile engine be to much power? Any help would be an asset. THANX. |

bubba if your axels are driven by keyway than the sky is the limit as far as power go's,
i'd go with a 340cc-400cc as a 440cc will unnesasarely punish the cat,
if there driven by bolts threw the drive tube&axel than 300cc-340cc is about it,
we tryed a 340cc and break bolts alot,however when its striped down to the fraim next were goin
to drill the holes out for a better fit(thanks tim wafer)for the dril and bolts |

I have an Amphicat that was built in Michigan (Magna). It was bought new by my dad and I drove it regularly as a kid. It is a single speed and used to have a 16hp Sachs. How can I tell the year model? |
