How do I set the float level on my Mikuni VM 30 carburetors? I changed the needle and seat and the float tang is now in the wrong position. Do you set them at level or is the tang at an angle? I have done automotive carbs and lawn mower carbs and usually the tangs are set to be level. Are snowmobile carbs the same?

liflod,
turn the carb upside down with the bowl off, with the float under it's own weight measure the distance from the outside of the float to the gasket surface of the carb. bend the tang accordingly. the actual distance i am not sure of, but a quick call to mikuni, and you will know for sure.

Problem, the carb has 2 independent floats that are connected to the bowl.

Yes, there are 2 small round floats that ride on a rod connected to the float bowl. there is a small brass rod that sticks out of the floats and hits the tang that closes the needle valve. I do have a Mikuni VM tuning manual that I found on the net. It has some specs on the float adjustment , but it does'nt quite make sense to me.

i had one of my micuny floats sticking and not reterning down into the boal, i removed the little cap from the rod and removed the float, trimed it a little with a knife and replaced it onto the shaft, then i put that little cap back on, now it drops both floats smothly into the boel when inverted and reterned upright!

Well, after some feedback from a few people, I (we) decided the tang should be level when held upside down.
I set the floats a few months ago and all was working good.
I finally discovered a great cheap way to synchronize my carbuerators. I installed a 3/16" tube in my carb adapters , (round to rectangle). I used a 6ft piece of clear tubing , with some water in it , to join the "vacuum ports" together. I looped the tubing down low where the water was equal heights on both sides of the droop. I tied the tubning together with some wire ties so I could gauge the height of the water in each tube. I started the engine and put a spacer under the throttle to hold it open. Using the water height as a gauge, I adjusted the cable tension on the carbs until the water was even on both sides. I removed the spacer and let the engine idle and leveled the water with the idle adjustments. Done!!!
I took a ride afterwards and the engine ran smoother than it ever did. The difference with synchronized carbs is amazing! If you have dual carbs, you should definately try this. Let me know if you try this with good success.
