That's really up to you. A lot of people would rather change their older machines over to a 4-stroke engine, but there are others of us that will put up with the little inconveniences that you always have with a 2-stroke. JLO made a very good engine and in my opinion it would be well worth saving. Parts are still readily available through Richard's Relics or ebay. |

I have a frozen JLO 295 in my Wedge project. I seem to recall someone "unsticking" one of the motors by pouring some kind of lubricant into it and letting it sit...any ideas? |

It really depends on what's "stucked" on the engine. If the rod is seized on the crank....it's quite a bit of work. If the piston is just stuck in the bore because it's been sitting, you can (sometimes) take the head off and tap it down with a block of wood and a hammer. Use plenty of penetrating oil in the intake/exhaust ports and on top of the head. Don't get too ambitious with the hammering; it might free up easily if this is the only stuck part. If it moves a little bit, try moving it back and forth by grabbing the clutch and make progress little bit by little bit. Afterwards, take the jug off (just four bolts) and inspect the cylinder bore, the piston and rings. They may need replacement, or they may be fine. I've saved a number of engines this way, and as long as you're patient, they can come back fine. I have a couple Rockwell twins that run great after freeing them up this way. As long as the problem is just up top, and not into the rod/crank bearings you should be able to save it. Good luck! ~M |

It could be a number of things, Anthony. You could have a non-working choke, leak in the suction side of the pump, leak in the line for the pulse diaphram in the pump, bad fuel pump, bad crank seals, dirty or misadjusted points, and I'm sure there's lots more. I'm afraid that if you use a can of ether every time you start it up, the engine won't last long enough to diagnose the problem. Won't the engine start by just cupping your hand over the carburetor? |

Anthony Do a compression check, each cylinder must have at least 125 lbs (on each side) in order to run and draw fuel in. I, like Don Kinyon, suggest you look into leaking crank seals. As Don said if you run engine much on starting fluid you will waste engine anyway Thanks Richard Clark ROUTE6x6 See my ATV parts website (listed below) for more ATV parts.
