I took the engine out of my terra tiger, it looks to be in good condition and want to pull it down completely and then make a parts list. I'm at the point where I need to remove the flywheel and clutch and not sure how to proceed, can I buy the pullers or would it be better to take it to someone to remove them for me. Also is there any other special tools I may need from this point on?

George,

Taking the flywheel off is a pretty easy task with the correct puller (aka "steering wheel puller") which is available for rent at most auto stores, or just buy it. It's a very valuable tool to have. The clutch is a bit more difficult, since many different clutches on different engines may require specific pullers. Are you running a JLO single in the 'Tiger? They're a great reliable engine when setup and maintained correctly.

Good luck!

Hi Mike, it is the original JLO 295 18 hp motor. I have a steering wheel puller but was not sure the three 6mm bolt holes were to be used, actually I was trying it with the steering wheel puller when I noticed that the inside of the flywheel is threaded for a different type of puller, kind of like a power steering pump pulley puller. I'll give it another try, do you think I'll be able to get a gasket kit, crank seals and rings for this motor?

George,

Ahh, the 295 has just recently become one of my favorite little engines. I have the 295 in my Attex ST/295, and it has been just amazing. It has plenty of power to move the Attex through the stickiest mud, and up the steepest hills. Gaskets, seals, pistons, rings, rods, bearings, cranks, cases, coils; just about anything you need is available. For a simple gasket set, check out www.mfgsupply.com. They may also have pistons and rings.

If you run into a difficult part to find, give Matt Priebe a call over at Recreatives Industries (800-255-2511). Matt has an entire grocery list of NOS JLO parts for singles and twins at unbelievable prices. Perhaps the greatest upgrade to the mighty 295 is a 28-32mm Mikuni carb to replace the Tillotson, if it's still hanging around.

The three 6mm bolts are for the puller to attach to. Just make sure you get long enough bolts to thread into the flywheel far enough. Put some decent pressure on it, and if it doesn't pop right off, give the puller a WHACK (OK, a gentle WHACK), and it'll pop right off. Guaranteed.

Good luck!

Thanks Mike the flywheel is off, now I will tackle the clutch in the next few days. Is there anything I need to concern myself with when I split the cases, any other special tools I may need? It still has the Tillotson, so far everything is looking pretty good, thanks again.

There are probably a jumble of "special tools" that you should use, but which can be accomplished with a basic mechanics tool set. I won't endorse using the wrong tool for the job for fear of malignment by the board. I can't think of anything you'll encounter that you can't tackle inside the case. You really can't get a whole lot simpler than the JLO single as far as complexity goes. If you need an exploded diagram of what the insides of the beast look like (with part numbers) e-mail me back channel at mcummings<at>geomatrix.com and I'll get a .pdf off to you...

Hi Mike
Would you happen to have the model number for the Mikuni carb replacement? I'm hunting down and collecting parts for my SPD Wedge project.
Thanks so much!

How is that Wedge project of yours. I decided to keep mine and replace the 295 JLO with a 10HP Briggs. I'm going to let the kids drive it and 10HP should be plenty. That 2-stroke in the fiberglass body tends to resonate and it sounds twice as loud as it should. Let me know if you need any info on your rebuild.

Terrence,

My 295 has a Mikuni VM28 (28mm) carb. on it. It's the style that has the flange built in, so it bolts right up to the carb adaptor with out the rubber flange. I don't know the part number of the adaptor that converts the HD78 Tillotson over to the Mikuni flange style, though.

Hey Liflod, good to hear from you!
I wondered if you ever sold your machine. My restore hasnt progressed much (kids, home remodeling, work, wife,...life, you know how it goes) I'm going to really see if I can get some time devoted to it so yes, I will DEFINITELY need some help. I've been trying to find a good JLO on ebay but I havent had much luck. I want a speedy motor so from what I understand, that may be the best option. If I cant find a GOOD one, I'll rip into mine and see if I cant find some NOS parts to rebuild it. How did your machine run with it? Sorry to hi-jack this thread, George. I'll start a Wedge thread here shortly.

No Problem Terrance, it's all interesing reading. Whats the Wedge project consist of? I got the clutch off my JLO the other day, no problem it's a 13/16 fine thread and I used a bolt and a few washers and it popped off. I'm still trying to get the drive clutches off the mainshaft, can't get the pins out but I will. The Terra Tiger is just sitting on jackstands now completely stripped waiting for a degreasing. I'm picking up 6 new axle bearings for it today, but I'm having a little trouble finding the axle seals.

Thanks, George
I have a 1970 SPD Wedge that I'm working on at a glacier's pace. I missed a few NOS JLO motors on ebay so now I think I'll probably follow your lead and try to rebuild mine. It will be a while before I can get started on it, however.

I think its been 2 years since I drove the Wedge. I took it to Copper Ridge and played with it in the pits. I never had it in mud or tried any type of hills with it. The engine does have enough power to get it going. I rode it with Rawhides and it rode like a brick. I put 6 balloon tires on it and it is much better. The problem is the fiberglass is very rigid, it does not flex at all like a Max or Argo. The fiberglass also resonates with the 2-stroke so it is louder that it should be. I need to get the transmission fixed on it. I have it locked into forward gear. The transmissions are junk. Theres 3 dogs inside the transmission that transfer power. There is less than 1/2 square inches of contact to transfer the power. Make sure the transmission band brake is working. It will stop the transmission from spinning while shifting gears. If the transmission doesn't stop spinning, the corners of the dog break off and you will never keep it in gear. I'm going to pull it eventually and send it to a professional to have it reengineered for durability. All it is is a right angle gear box with forward and reverse. It is exactly the same as forward and reverse on an outboard boat motor.

So is it a "fun" machine?? Would it be better with a bigger engine? This may prove to be an embarrasing statement but, I wanted a Wedge because they LOOK so cool! Once I get this one in a driveable state, I think I'll look for a more "practical" machine to play on like an Attex. I tend to like the obscure models...I also have a Gotcha and a Jiger in project condition.
