I just bough a 6 wheel ATV, from the pics I have seen it looks like a rough rider the only thing readable on the plate is made in Canada it is a 2 seater, no motor or tires but body is in workable shape is there any information avalible for this machine? This is my first ATV so any help would be great. Things I need to know are what size motor works, where I can get tires and wheels(what size too)and is there a manual on this ATV. I know that sounds like alot but like I said this is my first and I have wanted one of these for along time and finally got one. Thanks for the help. Ron |

Ron, Get ready to sink a bunch of money in a less than desireable AATV.You are going to spend around 500.00 for tires ,wheels, adapters.Motor with the right clutch$$$$. Then you have a unreliable belt drive system, with to light of axles. What I am saying is before you put money in a somewhat rare model, you may want to look for a Max, or Argo. You can spend alot of money and not have a reliable AATV that you are dissapointed in. Remember some companys went out of buisness because of bad machines that didnt measure up to the others. Eddie |

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Eddie. I see a lot of project vehicles end up a planters for weeds in the yard or as a place to pile on stuff in the garage. I hope you didn't spend a lot of money for the machine and I hope you have access to a machine shop or other means of fabricating parts. It can be frustrating trying to fix up a basket case. I can relate to wanting one for a long time. I wanted one as a kid back in the 70's and my Dad told me "no, they are junk" instead I ended up with a Honda motorcycle. I rode that Honda several times a week for 10 years. I still wanted an amphibious ATV and the manufactures dropped off because of one reason or another. The good ones remained. I am glad I waited and had to do what my dad said. Otherwise I might have bought a machine that turned out to be a piece of junk and I would have given up on the amphibious atv completely. Now I have a machine that gets used several hours a week and only has to have basic maint. and not major repairs. Ron I don't want to discourage you too much, just be prepared for some headaches and challenges. I like to be out riding in the machine and not turning wrenches, but if you like that then you may have a good time. |

I gave $39 dollars for it on ebay, I bought a 20HP motor from a friend with a clutch off a golf cart for $25, the body like I said needs a little work, I just need to figure out how everything hooks together, all the chains are there and the levers and cables are there is there a place to get specs on how to hook it all up? Thanks for all the comments like I said this is my first I did not figure on putting alot of money into it, if nothing else I can say I have had one (right) thanks again Ron |

Don't get too worried about fixing up an old machine. Granted its not going to be a Max,Argo or Attex when its done, but it will be a blast to drive and you will learn alot more about how they work than you will if you bought a new machine. Just be aware that if you pay top dollar for all the parts that you use, you will not be able to get that money back when you decide to sell it. But if you can get it up and running for a decent price, you will be $$$$ ahead of buying a new machine. If you are taking the frame out of the body, if there is a frame on a Rough Rider, you can test fit the whole drive train before putting it back in the machine. When I bought my first Attex, the body was outside ,the frame was inside. All the axles, chains and bearings were in boxes and I had no idea how to put it back together. It took a little trial and error, but I did get it up and running. |

Sure the Roughy is a "lighweight", but it's still a really neat machine. There's no conventional transmission... just a whole lotta' belts, levers, and stuff, LOL (looks really cool). Drives and steers real easy too. Your in luck!! I have (in .pdf format) a complete service manual, advertizing brochures, etc, etc. The files are too big to fit on my puny FTP site, so I will email you the stuff (in two seperate emails) if the pic below (beside Argo) matches your machine. (Let me know) Any one else wanting this rare documentation, just drop me a line at bookm97@yahoo.com . I believe there's a section on this site for this type of info, so perhaps Richard would like to add it. |

Too bad for me, the guy won't sell to Canada Luckily, I have a line on a guy who has a lot of new "old stock" from the factory, sittin' in his garage What was your search "keywords" for finding these parts on e-bay?? I keep hearing about this part or that, but my keywords always turn up hundreds of Sports jerseys, or plastic GI Joe models 'n stuff, LOL |

The link above is the seller with all his listings of it and others. You could use "ROUGHRIDER" probably. I came acrossed it finding a few of his parts for it and "viewed" sellers other listings to see all. |

I looked on e-bay the ads I saw had some handles and a relay with some wires on it for the org motor, Has any body ever thought about putting an electric motor in one of these? you could have reverse and would not need a clutch, what do you think? The only draw but I can figure would be the batteries you would need at least 3- 12 volt or 6- 6 volt batteries. Ron |

RON, wouldn,t it be a bit like driving an electric Golf Cart? Some of the hard core types on this site are so addicted to speed that they won,t trade their two strokes for four strokes.I agree that any amphib is better than none but I am interested to hear other people,s thoughts on Electric. I quess that is why I brought it up. I get thinking about stuff and these ideas just come out. If you were using batteries and you were hunting or fishing there is almost no niose, and a charge can last up to 4 or 5 hours of running. What you think, yes it would be slower but is that a good trade??? Ron |

David, You remember it to, this was the ultimate AATV and would go 50 miles or something like that on a charge.Maybe on flat ground, and what was the weight be on this? If it was so good it would be in production by now,I keep picturing a offroad golf cart when electric ATV is mentioned. |

OK guys I found a 1975 440cc motor with clutch is that to big for this atv, it is in a snow mobile and it is suppost to be a good motor I would be getting the whole snow mobile so I would have the cables and all that stuff. What do you think (give it to me straight) Thanks Ron |

I think it will be too wide to fit, since the clutch is right up the centre of the machine. I have the same motor in my Argo, but wouldn't even think of putting it in my Roughy. It's just too light duty a machine. Find a single cylinder engine for it if you can. Most old sled engines will allow you to turn the head around to suite the carb and exhaust. You'll need to find or make a 45deg intake adapter to mount the carb, and a custom exhaust flange will be required to exit the exhaust out from under the seat. |
