I have a flat plate on a piece of square stock that fits into the hitch receiver. I have a winch mounted on it. The winch is removeable and can be stored in a box in the back of the Argo. To use it I put the winch and hitch together and attach the power cables to some marine style batter terminals that are remotely mounted in the back of the Argo. This also allows a trolling motor to be quickly hooked up. The winch has the solenoid attached to it so there is no seperate mounting of the solenoid. I just use it for getting the Argo unstuck when I can't get it to back out. This is sort of a lot of extra stuff. A person might be a lot better off just carrying a comealong and a length of rope and an anchor shackle. What do you want to use the winch for? |

I run into the same situation with an area I ride. It is a lake that drops about 6 to 10 feet in the summer and going from the dry shore to the water is a challenge. The mud or silt is too soft to support weight yet not quite wet enough to swim through. I run the runamucks for the water propulsion but I think just about every tire would have the same problem. I think I'm rolling along ok then it slows and stops. Most of the time it is about 30 yard from the shore and something to tie off too. I got stuck at the boat ramp last time out. The water is down below the ramp and there is about a one foot drop to the mud. The other areas of shore are vertical rock face that are easily navigated when there is water but not now with the water way down. |

Don Jones of Argo World In Carson City made a custom hitch/carrier/winch for the back of his Argo. It put the winch about 2.5 feet higher than the hitch so it would not be scraping on stuff. Having it attach to the hitch gave it all the strength needed. I believe he used both his front and back winches to pull a pick up out mud so the set up works. Give him a call and he can tell you more (775) 884-4807 |
