Hi i recently brought home An old 6 wheel Atv it is green in color i believe it is an Argo .Probably in the early 70,s .The transmission has 3190g on it thats the only markings i can find .The engine is a Chapparrel 432 cc .I,m sure this is a replacement.if The engine is new to the machine what would be the proper engine .I,m thinking it is the wrong engine because the last owner said that sometimes the transmission would pop out of gear if he pulled away to fast .Would too big an engine cause this problem .Or is the transmission probably broke .If it is broke does it normally cost a lot for repairs Thanks in advance |

If memery serves me correctly (I once assembled trannys at ODG, 1980), the Argo shifter slides an internal gear along the length of a splined shaft. The gear had a spring-loaded ball bearing (compressed with a screwdriver during assembly) which would "click" in to shallow bore holes drilled along the splined shaft, at each of the four gear selections (reverse, neutral, low, high). I have a similar "gear-position" problem with my 1976 Argo. I believe the bore holes in the shaft are so worn out, in combination with a "tired spring", that they now longer hold the proper position efectivley. I've been toying with a design for an "external" shifter retainer. Would be a lot easier and cheaper than replacing the "in'ards". Also, I once owned a pre-'75 Argo with a Chapparel engine. It was the "factory" engine. Never had a tranny problem. My current '76 has a 45+hp Rotax (SkiDoo) engine, and the tranny works just fine. The things are "rock-crushers", so I wouldn't pull it apart if you don't really have to. Argo Trans: Book'm |
