A couple hours ago my 91 Max IV arrived. I need to degrease the bottom area, chain drive, & floor. When finished cleaning what would you recommend to lubricate the chain. Is there anything I can put on the red plastic to make it look better? It is faded just a bit. Thanks for your help in advance. Dave |

Daave C, I don't think there is any such thing as a red 1991 Max IV. The old red bodies stopped in 1979 (maybe early 1980) and the new red didn't become available until 1998. You need to call RI with the serial number and they will tell you what year you have. You should take the chains out and soak them in a penetating oil if the trough area is such that you need to degrease it. Once you are sure the chains are working correctly (no stiff links), you can use regular motorcycle chain lube, farm chain/cable lube or even chain saw bar oil (That is what I use and I put it on with a brush a link at a time while I turn the wheels by hand). Use "son of a gun" on the plastic - it won't restore it to new, but pretty well and is really slick (helps prevent mud, etc. from sticking to the body). |

I also have my doubts about it being a 1991. I don't think Max used a 2-stroke engine only 10 years ago. Fred, a friend of mine does have a 1984 Max II that is red. It has the original 16hp Tecumseh 4-stroke. I have also seen a red Max IV with 440cc 2-stroke that was real close to the 90's. It might not have had the original engine but it did have the red upper body. Give RI a call and they can tell you the year with the serial number. MaxRules |

Dave, I'm not familiar with the yesr max stopped making two strokes but I'm sure they don't anymore unless it's an option. Call RI. |

I suppose there could have been a few special order red max after they started making them brown (like they do now with the blue, black & Camo), but my information was that if it was Red, it was prior to 1980 - wouldn't be the first (or last) time I goofed. |

Why did they stop making red anyways I would figure that would be a popular color. |

Thanks everyone for your help on my mystery red Max IV. I guess during all the excitement I didn't care what year it was or if it was running or not. I just wanted it. I do believe this max IV is in very good condition. I have been cleaning it up. There is a dripping gas leak under the right dash area where they installed a new gas line and filter. It was to dark to look at it this evening but I did drain the gas. Again, I have read all the responses and would like to thank everyone very much for their help. Dave |

Dave, Exactly Ride on! When I bought my Attex I didn't care too much about much else except I knew that I wanted it! :) |

Pete- I think RI is sorta rotating all colors besides brown and green. The others were cool. I liked the idea of an all-black "stealth Max." There were a couple of black Maxes (both Max IV's, I believe), sitting outside the dock when I showed up at Recreatives to pick up my Max II four years ago. I don't know if they were old demos or what. I think that RI needs to bring out Attex Yellow!!! Maybe a limited run of flourescent orange, for survey/exploration work. Sure would make it safer to ride in the woods around hunting season! Later, DirtyHARRY |
