It's snowing agin & so that means it's time for this question again. Is there anything new on the homemade track front? How about pics of all the different types available? What was use din the past & present? What worked, what didn't.
I won't to be able to us emy machine in dep snow. |

i just bought some convayer belt from a farm equpt dealer and cut it then made slashes in it works great ond guy had said he also put more pieces on outside with small stanless bolts |

I was thinking of making tracks too.Iam thinking of rubber because my plastic ones dont do it for my Buffalo.Any good Ideas Iam open? |

Hi, Last winter i used plastic tracks and i didnot like them. They build up with wet snow and ride rough on hardpack.So i built my own for less then $100.00 I used SKIDOO track, glued and bolted them with a overlap. I made the guides from scrap metal.They work great.Here are some pics. KEN. |

Kenneth Your tracks look great! I really like the fact that you did not try to "reinvent-the-wheel" using a proven snowmobile track, seems to me to be the way to go. Please post some more photos. Many thanks Dave |

Kenneth those tracks look better than than the bailout plan for the economy. Talk about saving money, Im new to 6 wheelers just bought a used 1990 max and what to use it in snow.this looks like it will fit my budget just fine,thanks for the great idea,Gerry. |

Kenneth, I agree the plastic shakes the crap out of you on hard surfaces let alone the noise. Nice job on the homemade tracks!!!!! I presume you need axle extensions with those tracks as well? Do you bolt them together? Nice to see what resourceful people can do!!!

Hi Bodyman, the brackets are 1 1/2" flat bar. Short leg is 2 inches long with staggerd 5/16" holes. The long leg is 4 3/4" long. The last 3/4 of an inch is bent outwards with rounded corners with a small brace welded in the angle. You can get the brackets from the argo dealer for $4.00 or $5.00 with the backup plate but the leg is facing to wrong way to bolt onto a open hole 15" skidoo track so I made my own. I put the brackets about 5" apart. The splice in the track is one and a half overlap with rubber cement.The splice is bolted with nine bolts (5/16" by 1 inch). The bolts help grip on ice. I made two splices to form a circle. Then repeat all above for the other side. I lift the tires about 2 inches off the floor. I install the track around the tires. Leave air out of the front tires then start at back wheel first, then second then front and then air up the front tires. The tracks weigh 60 lbs each for my argo.You have to make sure you have enough space so your track does not rub on your body or you"ll need spacers

Thanks Kenneth, one more question. Did you use new sled tracks for this or purchase used ones. I am definataly interested in trying to make a set just to see how they work. Based on your estimate of cost it won't break my bank to try it. I like the fact that I don't need long extensions as I am using my Argo to haul firewood on a horse sleigh, so it is working hard already and I think it would be too hard on the bearings with extra wide tracks. Hey Tim, I used all tracks that I got from the land fill and snow machine shops just throw them away when they cut them off to replace with new ones so It's a good place to check. The ones without drive lugs inside are harder to get. I cut the inside drive lugs out with a recipatating saw. You don't have to cut them off too close, 1/8 or shorter is good. I removed the steel clips to lighten them. What part of Ontario are you from. I'm west of Sudbury. Lots of snow this winter. |

Thanks Kenneth, will keep an eye open going forward. I am an hour south of Ottawa, near Brockville, and we don't have near the snow we had last year. It's nice you have the machine to get around in all that snow. |
