I have an Attex 500 superchief and I am having engine problems. My ATV has a 484cc Chaparral engine. What is considered acceptable compression? Any advice with this engine would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same rig as you do, with the same engine. If I remember correctly I had 130 in both holes. If you want I will do another comp. test to make sure. Your very lucky, from what I hear the Super Chief is very rare. You want to sell it? I could use another!!!! If you have any other questions about your Attex let me know and I will be glad to help if I can.

I would really appreciate it if you could check that compression for me. I did a test tonight and only got 94 PSI in each hole.

Scott: Sorry for the long delay on this. I just came back from vacation and was dead tired but I just came back from the garage and checked the compression on my motor and it was 147 in each hole!! No wonder the pull starter is useless. Sounds like it is time to tear it down. If I may suggest it to you; buy your parts from Richard, if he has them. I have dealt with him before and he is very reasonable and very nice to deal with. If he does not have the parts let me know and I will tell you of another source. P.S. Get this thing running!!!!! With 45HP on tap you will be happy you did!!!

Bob,

Thanks for the info. As soon as I can I will be doing a full tear down.

Scott

I have been taking a few evening classes that have held things up. Befor I do any kind of rebuild, I need to find an electical problem. Every time I start the system, I get a shock that seems to surge. I believe that this is causing a sparks problem on the left side of the engine. I need to do some checking, but it is going to be spring befor I can give it the time it deserves.

Scott: Sorry you can't get your Attex running for the winter season. If I can help you with the electrical problem just let me know. My Attex has stock wiring so if you need me to check out the colors or where the wires go just let me know.

Prior to any Compression Test on "any two cycle" engine, remove both plugs, bring Pistons Up To "Top Dead Center", fill chamber with OMC Carbon Guard, let sit for 48hrs., place rag over Spark Plug Hole, pull through with Rope Starter several times"do not get Carbon Guard into your eyes", Then do your Compression Test.
Carbon Guard will "Melt" Grunge from around Rings.
