I managed to bend the right front axle on my Max II. I have ordered a new axle, but I can't seem to get the old one out. I have removed the set screws on the collar on the inner bearing, on the chain sprocket and on the brake drum. I took off the outer flange and assumed the axle would just pull out. I can't get it to budge. Is there something else I need to do or should I hit it with a bigger hammer? |

HEY STEVE: aparently your axle is ready to go out...just add plenty of penetrant oil (dw-40, liquid wrench,or similar) on brake drum edges, sprocker edges, inner collar, and bearing seat (outside of bearing) to "clean" rust-dirt between axle and bushing surfaces....be patient and let set a couple of days for penetrant oil to work..then try it again!! |

You have to loosen the lock collars. I assume you have splined axles because you say there is a set screw on the sprocket. Take the first one all the way out and there is another one under it.
Loosen both the inner and outer lock collars by loosening the set screw. Then use a hammer and a punch to make the collar turn. You will 'unscrew' the collar off the bearing. Usually you hit it left when the hole is on top just like you were unscrewing a bolt. If it doesn't come off after a few hits, try hitting it the other way. It is somewhat hard to do on your first time but after you know what to do it's easy and works well.

Steve, when you losen the lock-collar set screw, there should be another small hole on the lock-collar that is not threaded. I use a metal punch to lossen the lock-collar and spin it slightly counter clockwise. Its also a good idea to have the axle clean and lubed with WD-40 or some other type of lube. I use a emroy cloth to clean up the axle before I pull it out. A big hammer can sometimes be useful too. The axles can rust up making it very difficult to slide the lock-collar away from the bearings. |

guys his sproket trouble was a set srew under the first, he found that out alreary, now on the locking coller , he was takeing it off at the flange and the coller dosent mater that way, it dose however if you intend somday to get the bearing off the axel, now remember he said it was a bent axel, they bend inside the coller, somtimes braking the beareing race where it is locked by the coller too! now you cant turn the coller while the axel is bent, it's too tight! so straten it then use a spaner for the coller, your locking collers last longer that way, ( a punch,- now realy guys, ) |

The lock collar on my bent axle came off. The bearing will not slide off the axle, but he said he already took off the outer flange. The outer collar does not have to come off but the inner one does. Most of the time, the outer collar will come off and some people reuse the bearing. I recommend buying a new bearing because the old one is surely damaged. The outer bearing will come out with the axle once the flange is off. The flange will then be stuck between the bearing and the hub so break the outer case off the bearing with a hammer. Then you can get the flange off and put everything back together. |

Thanks a bunch. I took out the second set of set screws and unlocked the collar and it came right out. The outer bearing appears to be ok. I am going to check on the price of a new one anyway. Thanks again. I love the Max... it was stupid driving that created the bent axle. |

BUT THE FLANGES ARE CHEEP ENOPH TO GET MORE AND THEN HE WIL HAVE SPAIRES IF HE WISHES TO DO THE AXEL CHAINGES THE NO HASEL FLANGE WAY, HE JUST NEEDS TO REMOVE BOATH SET SCREWS NEXT TIME,
THE BEARING CAN BE PRESSED OF EASYER AFTER THE AXEL IS STRATEND,
THOUGH TO SAVE TIME LAST SEPTEMBER I DID USE THE HAMER METHOD,
( I FORGOT TO BRING ALONG A SPAIR AXEL) |
