Hello guys I am new here, I'm helping a buddy out with his 2014 Max IV he just purchased used but it very nice shape, as you can see in the title it has a horrible hesitation when pulling the throttle from an idle position. Pulling wide open it will almost die untill it catches itself then throttles up. It's got the Kawasaki twin cylinder 4 stroke with governor. It has this problem with a cold or hot motor, the only adjustments the carb has are 2 fuel mixture screws and an idle screw, the mixture screws are 2.5 turns from seat, half more turn out to richen and it lightly smokes (flooding) half for turn to lean and runs choppy... I can't imagine hesitation is supposed to be there, once driving and it runs great it's just from and idle position to fast open is where the problem is. BUT I can pull the choke and the response is awesome untill it floods then once the excess fuel clears we are back again. I pulled the carb and there was no gunk or crud anywhere, I do atv and motorcycle repair on the side so I know what I'm doing it's just this machine is stumping me. I checked fuel pump output and it will fill a 16oz water bottle in 30sec so it's getting fuel.. I can't imagine this hesitation is supposed to be there.. your thoughts.. |

update, with the air cover base plat off, i got an idea and cut a square piece of cardboard and covered half the air intake to see the throttle response after air supply was cut and it runs like a top! response is fast and accurate and does not flood or smoke. wide open you can tell it wants more air so cut a little at a time off the cardboard piece till it ran fine on the top end and still has response on take off, so now just need to make me a restrictor plate to cut down on the mass airflow and we will be good. |
