Hi, I am new to this forum. I am restoring a 1990 Vanguard Agro, and was wondering how to remove the drive axle, in order to change the bearings ? I have the chains off, and have already replaced the front axle bearings, but there does not seem to be any way in which to remove the drive axle. Thanks. |

Ed See this web site, Route6x6 the section called HOWTO as a nice step by step photo guide on how to replace axles and axles bearings, use one called MAX Splined as they are almost same as Argo Jeff Bar |

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your response.I saw the pics, my problem is that both the bolts / nuts are spinning around the flange that holds the outer bearing on the drive axle, and I do not have room to get a wrench in between the chasis and plastic inner body of the argo for the outer bearing on the drive axle. the 1/2 inch wrench loosened them somewhat, but now they both spin, any suggestions ? Or possible techniques that I am missing ? |

Can you grind a wrench down real thin to get between frame and body Steve |

Well if I'm reading this right, the whole bolt and nut are spinning. Does the bolt have a dome shaped head? I know on mine, you have to keep the bolt head pushed in to keep the square part under the bolt head in the square cut out in the bearing flange. Maybe someone butchered the bolts, any chance of getting a set of vice grips on the bolt head? |

Ah, how about take your angle grinder and cut the bolt heads off, keep some water handy and splash a bit on to keep the surrounding area cold and it won't melt the platic tub. |

I am in the middle of rebuilding my 2002 Argo Bigfoot. Engine, axles, chains everything. So far here what I found. 1.) You must have a sawzall. If you do not have one go buy one. I did. 2.)Those round head bolts are carriage bolts. If they start spinning. Use your sawzall and cut them off. 3.)Axle bearings lock on to the axles and even with a good slide hammer they do not come out. Use your sawzall and cut and replace the axles. I am on axle number 5 and I had to cut every one. The new carraige bolts are available at your local hardware store. Don |

Hey Don, are you saying that 5 out of 8 bearings so far are rusted to the shaft or am I missing something here? If so, man that sucks! I have a 92 and any of the ones I have replaced I have been able to free up the locking collars, then pull off the bearings without much cursing. I do however own an ever handy sawzall and angle grinder for 'fine adjustments'. |

Okay, not to throw a wrench into the instructions, but I used a large gear/bearing puller to get off the center axle bearings. After the initial breaking the bearing loose from the rusted location, they slid off pretty easily. Mine is a 2001 BF Argo. |

I guess I just been having bad luck. I went out and bought a very good slide hammer. I remove all carriage bolts (8 of them per axle), remove the axle end bolt, loosen the bearing set screws and slide away with the slide hammer. They do not move. So I said screw it and bought the new axles for a few hundred bucks. I personally think it is worth it. I bought my bigfoot new back in 2002, but I was renting a home with no garage, so yeah, sorry to say that It lived outside. Now I just bought a home with plenty of garage space, so I owe it to the argo to give it new life. New axles, bearings, seals and carriage bolts. Only the flanges have not been replaced with new ones. Not needed. maybe I am going overboard, but the replacement job has been going very well. After this project is over, I will have the new axle assemblies, totally rebuilt 18 horse vanguard and all the electrical laid out nice. I have added a winch, driving lights, argo tail lights, cute little blue interior lights and a backup light. I also have one of those rolly polly gauges (angle gauge)that is meant for a jeep. |

Hey Don, I'll say that's a bit of bad luck but yeah it's likely going to be a lot less maintenance after all the replacement, and inside storage from now on. You are right, sometimes it's easier to just say screw it and save the time and frustration. I need new chains, and likely sprockets, so I am not looking forward to that bill, let alone what I find when I get in there. I have replaced a few bearings now and have not had an issue with seizing so far. I am pretty sure I am going to regret that last statement..... |

Better to fix it all now, rather than everyweek having something else break , I am just about ready to replace all my axle bearings again, but they have lasted 4 years with about 350 hours, not too bad, from what I read Jeff Bar |
