What chain lube do you guys use, everything I use seems to fly off and have more on the lower body than the chains? Ryan |

I understand as does everyone who owns one of these machines. In my experience the cheaper lubes (like those bought at Lowes such as Liquid Wrench) are the most messy. Pretty much anything you get at a motorcycle shop is much better and less messy. bill |

Just use very little as most of if just flys off anyway. Some of the M motorcycle stuff claims to cling and stay on. Dave |

Another thing you can do that helps is wait for the carrier to evaporate and then wrap a rag around the chains while turning the tires to wipe off everything you can. the lube on the ouside of the chain does nothing other tahn make the mess bill |

I just use a little oil on a rag, wiping down what i can get to, it spreads by itself when driving, just do not put too much oil as yes it flys off Steve |

steve i would be afraid that the oil is not getting where it needs to be(inside the rollers) if all your doing is wiping oil on with a rag. The outside of the chain does not require oil. just my 2 cents worth bill |

Steve 23 years on off road motorcycles rinding enduros taught me a little about roller chain. a lot of people spray the lube onto the center of the chain (on the rollers) this is not the correct way to lube a chain. the spray should be directed at the side plates while slowly turning the chain. both sides need to be lubed(two steps) bill |

23 years on bikes, how do you cope with the slow nature of these machines? |

great question, long answer. it is very different but i had an attex colt when i was a kid so i understand the nature of both. off road bikes are in my blood but the injuries over the years take there toll and i like to think at 52 i am smart enough to know to stay off of them. i like most all off road machines and they are fun in different ways. there is nothing (i have experenced) that compares to the thrill of a woods bike. Many of you guys may not know this but our own Richard Clark was a national caliber offroad motorcycle rider, factory rides and all! bill |

Bill I used to ride off road too, here in Florida, rode a Penton then a Suzuki PE. Rode the Dayton Alligator a few times. That was years ago too. Do you remember that event? Did you ride with Mr Clark, is he the same who road Baja, as I used to follow it. I never rode MX as I was too slow Used to dream about riding with Goodpaster, Smith and Martino, those were the days funny thing we both like 6x6 now. Pete6x6 |

Peter I came real close to buying a 175 jackpiner. the green tank and leather tool bag was to cool. the head on that bike was so big it looked like a 400. those were the good days. did you mean to say the daytona alligator? i remember reading about it in dirt bike. some of the moto cross riders used to ride the enduro, i guess just because they were there. Yes richard did ride baja several times. he is a good friend of mine as we only live 15-20 min apart. Kind Richard(Burleson) was my idol. good to hear from you bill |

We use Bel Ray chain lube on ours, as we always used it on our dirt bikes. And as Bill said oiling rollers does nothing! And using high quailty chain is most important thing on 6-8 wheelers!! Don't use the cheaper chain! If you have chains off machine you can soak them in oil for few days and then hang up to allow excess to run-drip off, and then wipe off when installing. I use to race MX and Hare Scrambles in my younger days as well! Had Puch 125 for hare scrambles and then had Maico 400's for MX. Still have my 1st 1974 MC400 (in pieces now)need to get it restored someday! My brother still has his old Hodaka 100 Super Rat. They were a great little bike in their day! Jeff |

Jeff glad you piped in. My brother had the exact same Maico. We bought it from an older banker that raced moto-x and got a new bike every other year, I can even remember his name after all these years! Maybe i am wrong but wasnt it just a 4 speed? It was a beast and his 1st bike, wow, what a way to start. |

Bill Yes it was a 4 speed! I brought it new in March 74, ran 2 years and when AW's came out in 76, I brought AW400 it had 5 speed. In 78 it got stolen and was never recovered. Man do I miss it! My uncle sold Indian, Hodaka, Puch and Maico back then so we got them at dealer cost! |

Man those were the good old days! I can remember a few years back when Maico tried to make a come back. Are they still around? Was it the same company or just someone using the name? If I remember they were blue. bill |

Those were the days! Go too this web site for history of Maico's. And I believe a small company is making a few of them yet. http://www.maico.mxbikes.com/ http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MAICOMOTORCYCLES/ |

Peter I raced the Baja 1000 and the 500 events a few times, however my racing was done in the late 1970's and 1980's. I never saw the Attex racers, which I believe were from 1969, years before me. I understand they raced them only one time, in their own class. I am sorry I do not know anything about them or their efforts. I also raced the Blackwater Scrambles twice, in the early years. One year there were two 6x6 machines that ran the course in the ATV quad class. I do not think they completed the entire race, but my memory may be wrong. The year was in the early-mid 1980's. Blackwater was known to be one of the toughest races due to the water crossings with step banks, which became a mud mess due to the numbers of cycles and quads that went through them. The spectators (known as fleas) used to throw beer cans at the racers, stuck, unable to get up the slick banks. The greenies shut the race down, due to environmental impact. Dirt Bike magazine had a few photos of the 6x6ers in one of their issues. Here is a Video link: Sorry I do not remember more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ7uxD1XoXg&feature=related Richard Clark ROUTE6x6 RICHARD'S RELICS (Message edited by richard on May 06, 2009) |

Richard, interesting story, I did not know the attex were from 69. I think I know why they only ran one year BTW have you been back to baja anymore for the race? Peter Trusty |

My dad used to race a Maico at carlsbad in the early/mid seventies. I had a Hodaka Steen 90cc, I think. It had a back sprocket the size of a trash can lid. |
