I have a low-hours 2001 Max IV 600T arriving next week. I'll be using it in a relatively remote part of the state where there is no cell phone coverage and I'll be walking a long, long way if I break down and can't get going again. I've got all of the survival essentials. What essential spare parts should I take with me? Max IV parts? Briggs & Stratton 18hp parts? Fluids and other supplies? Tools? I've already learned a great deal from Richard's site and reading this board. Thank you all for sharing your wisdom and experience. |

a buddy with another machine is the best survival kit and toolbox and spare parts kit that money can buy. They don,t call it the BUDDY SYSTEM for nothing. A belt, chain link, throttle cable. tire plugs ,air compressor, small cargo strap for resetting the bead, spare idler sprocket and a few tools sounds right, buddy or not. |

Thanks Philip. Oddly enough, I'm usually the buddy that thought of everything ahead of time and brought along the right stuff. |

I have found out the weakest link in a MAX4 is the main rear drive chains, they are only 52 links, I suggest you carry a spare O-ring chain for this. this chain could be put on in the field. I would also carry: I think this small list would apply to most machines, on Argos I would carry same parts but add brake rebuild kits with brake fluid too I bet others will add to this list too Main Drive O-ring chain Drive belt Throttle cable Throttle Spark plugs Robert Longfellow |

You might want to carry tire sealer with a CO2 tire inflator . Ryan |

Thank you, Robert. That's the sort of advice-from-experience I'm looking for. Do I need to buy a specific chain? Thanks, Ryan. I have a 12v compressor and will pick up some sealer. |

you might consider installing o-ring chains on the back right away and save the old chains for spares. dont forget the fire extinguisher. bullwinkle |

new to the market is a dashboard style gps unit that at the touch of a button sends your location to either your friends or 911. I think I saw it in a Cabellas, not sure. |

http://www.magazine.noaa.gov/stories/mag96.htm You can buy a basic PLB (personal locator beacon) for $129 and a $99 per year basic service fee. For another $7.95 per year you get helicopter extraction. (Make sure you read the fine print.) There are rentals available: http://www.plbrentals.com/ Not a bad idea for extended trips in tough terrain. |

Thanks Brad. As a newcomer to aatvs that's the sort of thing I need to know. Does anyone have any Max IV specific recommendations? Best fluid brands or types, grease, anything I need to know? Is there anything on Richard's site I should have? Thanks again, Peter |

thats true ryan. its also a good idea to replace your kits very 3 years or so. the last time i needed something from one of mine everything in it was pretty much useless due to age. bill |
