Does anyone know the drive chain specs for the Argo products? I want to do a full scale replacement of the chains and was wondering if anyone had purchased this in bulk from a chain manufacturer and made their own lengths . I have purchased the exact same bearings and seals, as well as a voltage regulator from sources other than Argo, at significant savings, so I was hoping to source the chain elsewhere as well. I believe that it's relatively standard so any help would be appreciated! |

Tim, I know I've seen a couple of the preferred chain brands on this site, but, you know, memory, not all what it's cracked up to be. If you do a search, there are a couple brands, Japanese origin that a lot of guys like. Some of the "other" off shore brands are not worth the aggravation. |

Forgot to add, if you're looking for the chain size and # of links, that's in the back of the Argo parts manual. |

Hey Erich, thanks but I did not get all the manuals for this 93, and the ones I do have are installation and I can't seem to find chain specs anywhere. I also have scanned PDF version installation manuals and can't find chain info in those either. I have seen a few chain articles here however I haven't found the ordering specs etc. although I think it's pretty standard chain. Will keep digging! Thanks for the help! |

From the parts manual, the rear chain is RC60 single x 88 pieces, the center is RC50 double x 76 pieces, the front is RC50 double x 42 pieces, the idler chain from the transmission to the idler shaft is RC50 double x 40 pieces. Then you need 2 x RC60 connector links and 6 x RC50 double connector links. The manual also indicates that when replacing the link clips that the open end of the clip is to face towards the rear when looking at the chain from the top. It doesn't make any note which way the link clips go on the transmission idler chain. Any "Q's", I'll see what I can find in the manual. I would use the old chain and lay it side by side with the new when pressing out the pins. |

Hey Erich, thanks for the time and effort, it is appreciated. In the description you mention RC60 single and RC50 double. My rear chains are double and in fact they all look like the same chain type only different length, if I am understanding this correctly. Now I am confused! (Happens easily, and often) Thanks again for your time. |

They started using single 60 on rear chains in late '90s? or so. The bigfoot and later model vanguards have a wider axle spacing, so chains should be longer. For my '97 response(short spacing), it's all double 50. It takes exactly 4 10ft lengths, with no waste or joined sections, and 10 master links, to do my 8 wheeler. My chain sources were all in 10ft offerings. Lay out one trans chain, and one each of 1st and second axle, end to end. On mine, that is exactly 10ft. My 3rd and fourth axle chains are each 5ft long. #50 chain is 5/8" long per link. About 192 in a 10ft length. Anyway, you can lay your chain out and see what you need, footage wise. |

Thanks Roger, that makes sense as mine is a 93 and it's all double. Any place I have found seems to sell it in 10ft lengths as well. Is it easy to un-join the links or do you need a special tool? |

You need a chain tool, they come in a couple different sizes, I've seen them around $15. If you are real careful, you might be able to do it with a small brass drift punch over a very small socket. |

The chain is easy enough to find now that I know what I am looking for, but it ranges anywhere from $12-17 a foot depending on where you price it. TSC stores carry RBL which is 50 bucks for a 10 ft roll but this is a China product. Is there really that much difference in chain to justify so much difference in price? |

There is a big difference in chain. Unless somebody recommends a budget source I'd stay away from it. Cheap stuff will stretch very fast. |

Not sure if the previous owner ever replaced the chains but I have 600 hours on it. I will likely just bite the bullet and get Argo chain based on your recommendation Roger. I don't want to be replacing it every 100 hours cause my time is worth something too. Thanks all!!! |

I didn't mean to recommend argo for chain.. don't know what their price is. Since you're up there and I'm down here I didn't say anything about sources. I do get chain from www.shoupparts.com. Their American made in 10ft rolls, $108. In Illinois. Free shipping in US if you had a friend on this side of the border? Don't know how far that is for you. |

I understand Roger thanks, I live close to the St Lawrence river so I can see the US, but rarely get there any more. If it stays this cold (-28C) I will be able to drive the Argo across. Baffling that there is so much difference in price and 'original' chain comes in around 680 bucks for all. Seeing I was paying almost half for identical bearings and seals purchased elsewhere, I thought that there had to be a more cost effective alternative. I did look at shouparts but when you factor the CDN dollar (should have bought when it was at par) and shipping it would be relatively close to stock price, not including having to purchase a chain breaker and extra links. I looked at Allied in the US as well but some of that chain is assembled with China parts, hence the ebay listing of 48 bucks for 10ft lengths. I was told that "Allied would not put their name on it if it didn't meet their standards." I am still trying to source a Canadian manufacturer to see what they have. |

Hey Tim, I am in Ontario also. I changed all my chains last spring. I priced them at a local dealer but ended up buying them through my workplace. Our supplier is Kinecor. The price was a bit better and I have been told some dealers get their chains in the same place. They also sell it by the foot. |

So far, so good. I only have about 110 hrs on them. The chain is made by Renold or Tsubaki. The Renold is about $1 more per foot. If I remember correctly, the Tsubaki was about $12.50 per foot and the Renold was around $13.30 per foot. Keep in mind, I work for a Road Contruction company that buys from them all them at a discounted price, and I bought through my employer. I went with the Renold. |

Yes I called them and they are on the high end without realizing your discount. They also said they had one that was made for them by Renold and branded NTL? for Kinecor, it's quite a bit cheaper so not sure if that means it's not really the same. After all the investigation it seems that you will likely get what you pay for. Thanks for the information!! |

hate to beat a dead horse but has anyone had experience with Tsubaki chain products. Finally got the shop done and and going to tear the Argo apart and replace the chains so I am on the hunt again. A mechanic bud of mine says his supplier swears by this company for chains and my mechanic bud does a lot of business with him. I just hope that I am not swearing AT the chain which he said he can get for 9 bucks a boot. |

I have heard it's one of the better chains, a lot of the "other" offshore stuff stretches too fast. |

I have heard good things about the tsubaki as well. I get my chain from montecdirect.com I am not sure how the prices go but when I order it arives really fast. Of course I live 3 hours from the place too. I order regularly as I replace my main drive chains every year. |

I think it's the axels that are causing the problem! What do you guy's think? I think the bearings slide and then get loose. |

Tim, what do you mean you keep blowing out bearings on your ARGO? My inners and outers sit between 2 flanges each, once the flanges are bolted in, there's absolutely no side to side or radial play. Does yours have the eccentric collar or set screw on the bearings that needs to be tightened? So far in over 110 hours, I've only had one bearing go bad on me,(center inner 6X6). |

I have a greasable flange on the inside of the chassis for the inner bearings. Try finding the exact spot on the axle shaft before replacing the set screw, you should be able to see it with a flashlight, then add a drop of loctite, I've never had any back out...yet. |

I cant believe how stupid Ive been I have been using only one flange for the outer for years. That is why the bearing slipped and eventually failed. I have to add a flange to all four wheels. The front is diff. i |
