Hi Gang, haven't posted in a while been working a lot of o/t,so my project has gone slowly. But we are about to finish this contract and I hope to spend more time on the hustler.I have read some posts about split shifting the T-20 and was curious as to whether this has much of an advantage over stock shifters. And is there a way to do this with only one shift lever?Seems to me that there could be a risk of not getting all the way in gear and causing internal damage. What do ya'll think ? thanks GG |

There was a pretty big discussion with pics of someone who had already done the split a few years ago if you can find it. |

Gregg I split shifted my T20 in a max II a couple of years ago. I have not had any problems at all. If anything I find it is easier to shift. A max II is very easy to do. I don't know about a maxIV or other type of machine. |

thanks guys The hustler is finally up & going.Let me fill you all in on what I did.I started by removing the frame, cleaning rust proofing then 5 coats of paint the last 2 with a brush(heavy). The frame went in and out 5 times after this so I could check my measurements and weld up reinforcing for my winch mount, brush blades custom chain tensioners(rarely have to adjust those now),a split shifter that uses the original shifter along with a mechanism that breaks apart by pulling a seperate lever/cable to allow it to work. Then a custom fitted angle iron full perimeter band bumper was welded up with winch mount/brushguard,for the new Warn 3000rt winch. The motor mount had to be raised to fit the new 52" dayco belt(this allows for easier cleaning, oil change&reinforced trailer hitch).I added the following other new parts:bearings,chain,8 sprockets,tires(22"rawhideIIIs),wiring harness, amp guage, hourmeter, bilge pump&switch, choke cable, key switch, and transmission.I bought this as a basket case for $150 and now have a little over $3500 in it plus hundreds of hours of work. Was it worth all that? YOU BET!!! Gregg |

Dave,I bought it with a Briggs horizontally opposed twin 18 hp.Not the original 16 Kohler.I also had to put a new coil on it thursday. It began to die when I let off the throttle and would spin over longer each time before firing up,then it quit altogether.Did I mention that I was in a beaver swamp,50%chance of heavy rain and thunderstorms in an area that floods if you spit more than twice in one day, emergency parts run for sure!!! Anyway the new coil helped performance,no more stuttering when I throttle up.Will try to get pics up soon. |
