Hi Kevin-The transmission drain plugs on the t-20 tranny in your Maxiv are square head plumbing type plugs , they can be removed with an ordinary wrench but an 8 point 9/16 socket sure makes it easier for me. The upper fill plug is on the upper right hand side of the t-20, the drain plug is on the lower left side of the tranny. Right and left in this case is obviously from the point of view of a person standing behind yhe Max IV and reaching under the engine platform. The t-20 holds 32 ounces. It should be filled with 28 ounces of Ford type or F type (red)transmission fluid and 4 ounces of GM. posi=trac differential additive. Many people use other methods but on a MaxIV ,I like to remove as much fluid as possible with the small tube that comes with a Pella vacuum oil extractor. Then remove the lower plug and jack the front end up real high to totally drain the tranny. NOTE: the upper plug has a little, air screen in the center of it,so if you put that in the lower position it will leak. The lower plug should have a magnet in the centre of the plug.Happy Riding |

Thank you do you think using my regular car jack will get me high enough to drain fully, its a floor jack. |

Yup, my manual says LEVEL PLUG too Robert. I don't know why you don't have a magnet but you can get a new plug from RI. John Schwab put a little spigot in his "level plug" hole and puts a hose onto it and out his drain plug hole and lifts the nose way up with his winch to drain his Max II. |

You can if you want to get more room. A lot of the time it is easier to pull the engine and its mount to get to the transmission in the Max IV. You can always snake a vacuum hose and pull the fluid out through the top hole and put new fluid back in that way. |

Kevin, I said the wrong size! It's a 7/16"--8point socket that you need. Too simple. Like Jerry says use the vacuum pump hose. Fill the same way. "PULL the engine?" I don't think so. |

Pulling the engine is probably a good idea. You can't inspect the rear sprockets and axle very well with the engine and cradle in the way. I wish I pulled them and found the bad sprockets earlier. |

I can reach the bottom plug but not the top can I evac the fliud and fill it from the bottom only, and be ok. Also how tight should the chains be I tightened them up what would happen if they were to tight. |

Yes you can do it that way, just jack it up about a foot in rear when you go to fill. Chains that are a little loose are better than ones that are to tight. To tight will cause excessive chain and sprocket wear. I case you didn't know jack it up so the wheels and tires are off the ground to adjust the chains. You should have 1/2 to 3/4 inch of travel at the tightest point. To get the tightest point turn a tire by hand and test the chain tension. The sprockets are not necessarily centered or round. |

No, just jack it up and turn the tires forward by hand and see if the chain has any section where it gets looser or tighter than others. If it does then adjust it when it is at the tightest position. Then on the side of chain without the adjustment sprocket you want 1/2 to 3/4 inch of slack in the middle of the chain between the two drive sprockets. If the adjustment sprocket is on top that means you check your slack on the bottom section of the chain. Don't set it back down, all the adjustment is done with the tires off the ground. Then after you get it adjusted, spin that side a couple of times by hand and double check you slack of 1/2" to 3/4" |
