I have my T-20 apart, can not get the halfs back together completely, When I tighten the bolts, the trans will not turn, had it back and forth many times, everything seems OK any ideas? Thanks Ryan

The pins that anchor the bands can be difficult to line up with the center plate. Pulling the bands tight can cause the pins to pull to one side and not line up. I usually loosen the bands by pushing the band clevis in just a bit.

Brandon, Thanks for the idea, my pins are going into the hole OK, everything seems fine untill the last turn of the nuts on the bolts, then the shaft is locked u. Any other ideas? Please. Ryan

Ryan,

I just ran into this same problem. I found out that the inner c clip on the clutch side wasn't seated right in it's pocket because of the play in the shaft until you put the top c clip on.

I would install everything without the clutch on. When your putting the cases together don't put the clutch side up ended and lower the other case onto it. That's how I caused my problem. Also make sure the separator plate is all the way down in place it should be resting on the case on the clutch side. If it isn't all the way in something isn't seated right

My inner C clip is in correct grove, try putting it back together and still same thing, when you tighten the bolts around case, the last turn of the threads lock up the trans, any more ideas? Thanks

Ryan, I think you should just look over the parts again and make sure everything is seated in place. Make sure the ring gear drum is fully seated in place and not sitting on a part of the band. Also check that the planet gears and drum are seated in the carrier plate. Each of these two problems would be hard to see and cause you this trouble.

OK everyone, back apart for must be 50th time, Brandon thanks much for the help, but that is not my trouble. I have found that it will go together if I leave out the fiber washers that go under and on top of the small three gears which spin on the three pins on the two drums. It will also go together if I leave out the big fiber washer inside the ring drum. any ideas here? Thanks again Ryan

I feel you pain I was in the same situation 3 days ago. I had it apart at least 10 times. Here is what I did:

1st take a break and start fresh.

Tear everything out and start rebuilding slowly. The trickiest part on either side is to get the inner drum / plate / needle bearings and thrust washers to all seat in their proper place.

Here is a Tip: I assembled them outside the transmission and then used a piece of dental floss stretched around the yellow carrier plate with the three holes. That way you can lower it into place all as one unit. Then you can carefully slip the dental floss out and the assembly will be in place. The Drum can look like it's in place but it may not be all the way in the holes as Brandon said.

As far as the c clip (not it's groove) but how it rides in a pocket of the shift linkage.

Take your time I know something is just not seated right. I'm sure you'll find it! good Luck

I just could not see what was wrong, thank all you guys who helped, that what makes this sight great.

I called Route6x6 this morning, explained my problem, told what I had done, Richard said many of the same things you guys said, so we were on right track. We kept coming up blank, finally he asked what I had done to the trans, I told, that I had replaced the bands and installed a kit, he remembered me and remembered that I has traded some extra t-20 parts for bands, Anyway it came out that I had replaced a plantary drum with another one. Richard told me to measure free play between the mating surface of this drum and the mating surface of the center plate, mine was way to wide, I had installed a version of the plantary drum that was different from the one I has replaced, I measured the old one and the new one, sure enough had about 30 thous difference, as it turns out some plantary drums use either 1 or 2 or none, of the fiber washers, my version required only one. With this corrected the trans went together and all seems to be fine. Again many thanks to all who helped me, and to Richard for finally getting to bottom of my trouble. Ryan Singer
