Has anyone swapped in a 23 hp B&S and been happy with the power it has? I've heard that it does not have the same throttle response that the 14, 16, 18, and 20 hp B&S motors have. Heard it had something to do with not having an accelerator pump on the carburetor. I've also heard that instead of using B&S a person would be better off with the Kohler 25 hp that does have this accelerator pump on the carburetor. I don't know of anyone who has used the B&S and was wondering how it performed. I am wondering how the 23 B&S does in a sixwheeler when there is alot of throttle movement from fast to slow? Hope someone can clear this up for me.

I have a max4 and put the briggs 23 in. There is a hesitation if you are at a complete stop. Any rpm at all over an idle and it takes off fine. There is definitly more tourque than the smaller engines but it has best tourque at 2600-2700rpm. The kohler tourques out at 2200rpm. I was behind a kohler machine at Humphrey and they had 4 people, windshield, roll cage, winch+more and he got away from me on a long straight hill even though I was alone in my machine. If you are going to go through the effort I would use the kohler. Check your shaft size as I don't think the kohler comes in a 1 inch shaft. The kawasaki 23hp has almost as much tourque. Has anyone ever used it?

Timothy is that 23 Kaw. motor you are talking about a liquid cooled engine? Have you ever priced any of these engines? Has anyone ever used the big Honda engines like a 22 hp or 24 hp models? I'm not sure of the hp, I just remember seeing one in the Northern Tools Magazine. Do the Honda motors have an accelerator pump on the carburetor? Thanks for the help Timothy.

John, I replaced my 16hp Birggs with 20hp Kohler in a max IV. You need to get the engine from RI because they turn down their cranks to 1" to fit their clutches. The whole conversion was $1800 which included engine stand, wiring harness and belt. I thought long and hard about using the 23hp Briggs but decided against because of the reported carb problem. Neil

John, the engine i am reffering to is kawasaki model FH680D. It is a 675cc air cooled engine available in a 1 inch shaft. A lot of tourque(40lb at 2300 rpm)but only 23hp. The briggs 23hp has almost 33lbs tourque but at 2700rpm. I guess it boils down to what kind of driving you are going to do. If anybody has used a 4stroke other than briggs or kohler please join the conversation, I would like to hear your results.

Does anyone know what size the clutch opening is on a 25 hp Kohler powering the Max IV. I thought it was 1 7/16 size hole???? I'm interested in putting the Kohler 25 hp in my Max II like the one in my dad's Max IV. I understand I will have to get the bigger clutch that is used on the Max IV because of the different spring rates and size than the one the Max II is using now. I think the clutch on the 16 hp B&S is a 1 inch. Does anyone know what the correct sizes are for sure? I'm having trouble finding the correct size of motor shafts used in the Maxes. I want to make sure I order the correct diameter and length for the new motor. Thanks for the help.

the factory 25hp has a 1 1/8 shaft. you should be able to get a new variable drive for either a 1inch or 1 1/8 shaft from a local snowmobile shop. any other shaft size than that and you may have a problem. They usually retail for about $250 unless you can get a used one from richard clark. if you have trouble looking one up let me know, i probably have all the numbers around here somewhere. make sure your new drive is for the same width belt that you are using. I think the factory belt is 1 3/16 wide(not sure on that without going and measuring)

I was reading the message borad the other day and saw mention of some one who put a Briggs $ Stratton 23hp vangaurd engine in there Big Foot. I was wondering how it has worked out? I'm thinking of doeing the same to mine. When you play in 5 to 6 feet of powder snow the extra speed would shure be fun.
Thanks Tim

I was rolling in my sleep about a gs750 Suzuki 4 banger that I have sitting in my garage, for the argo. Cooling was a concern, but, I was thinking that a guy could put a small newer 1 wire alternator in there(there is shaft on mine coming out opposite of the secondary clutch)to run a large fan to keep the engine cool. But this would eliminate the smooth action of the autoclutches and make it direct drive. I think also it would be a little front heavy.
