I seem to be getting an abnormal amount of fuel leaking from the overlow on my Vanguard 18 hp. I was adjusting the idle setting and noticed a steady drip at idle. Under throttle, it clears up. It also seemed to stop after putting the air cleaner assembly back on the carb. Was this normal? Can anyone tell me the maximum safe hi-speed rpm for this stock engine? Is it 4,000?? |

Bill-yup 4000 w/o. I think your float level needs adjusting and I don't think it is safe to ignore it. I know it's not a big job but I haven't done it myself. Hope an experienced person jumps in. |

It's not a hard job at all, just don't over do it. Take off the air cleaner, top cover of the carburator, you will see the round "Donut" shaped float on the driver side of the carb. Slightly bend the donut side down a bit, no more than about a 1/16 to 1/8th of an inch. When the float bowl fills with gas, the float will now push up earlier on the needle and stop the flow of gas until the engine uses it, then it drops down again. While you have it open, and if it's not been done before, replace the needle and seat, they do get worn from "sitting" in place. |

If the fuel level is high, I'd wonder how it got that way. Make sure the seat of the needle hasn't unscrewed, and look at the needle for wear or dirt. My 97 model has a brass float I can bend, I've seen later models with plastic floats that don't look adjustable unless you change the thickness of the washer under the seat. See if the float has taken on gas. You're talking about fuel coming out the external vent tube in the top of the carb? and not the venturi I suppose. Interesting that it stops with the air filter on. Does the engine run fine or load up any. |

Thanks for the replys. The engine runs fine. The fuel drips out of the vent in the top of the carb. I ran it the other day and it seems OK now. Before, I had a strong gas odor and that's what prompted me to check it. I did notice there appeared to be a lot of fuel in the carb bowl. Mine is a 2001. |
