I bought an older Max with a single cylinder rockwell motor and can,t get any spark. Points looked good, is there any way to test the coil or condensor with average garage tools? Also where does the white wire that comes out of the rectifier go as it is not hooked to anything now? If I can't get any spark and want to change out the motor how do I get the clutch assembly off? Thanks for helping.

i bought a max 2 with the jlo lr 440-2 got it running ( not to good ) but running.i have several things going on like i took off the intake and did not see reed valves. gas was comming out the intake side of the carb, and for some reason i have to run the motor at almost full retard on the timing to get it to run. when i pulled the plugs ( new by the way ) one looked like it was not burning any gas ( i used a spark tester to check for spark and it does ). i am also wondering why does gas ( and a lot of it ) stay at the bottom of the intake. ( i also took the carb apart and adjusted the metering level ) it was to high. that seemed to help. i am getting my butt kicked by this thing. anyway i think timing on one cylinder is firing and the other one is off . had the motor out ( it used to belong to a friend that bought it in pices ) and set the points,my friend never got it to run ever.i know i went off in this post but i have been tinkering with this all weekend and was wondering what you all thought about it . it is very hard to get running.

First off do a compression test(anything under around 100psi will cause hard starting.)Next I would put crankshaft seals in both ends,if these leak you will not pull the right vacuum, and will run lean on one cyl.Looks like it is one or the other or both that is keeping you from pulling the right fuel mix to both cylinders.

Eddie's right, do the compression test first, and the seals are a good idea as well. The JLO isn't a reed valve engine, and you'll get some fuel spitting through the carburetor. Did you set the point gap & timing according to the manual? The timing doesn't have to be off very much to make the engine hard starting, and if you have to run it retarded it may be that the advance mechanism on the flywheel is stuck in the advance position. Good luck.

James, I forgot to say, but sorry to say but your engine sounds like it may be just so worn it will not run well at all, consider running the compression test as the others have said, I bet you will have to rebuild top end for it to b OK Jeff Bar

ok i am back and some really good advice.had the motor on the bench to set the points with the cam roller on it, the advance on the flywheel seems to be fine.ran the compression test and both cylinders are at 100 psi. the friend i got it off of just put new rings in it and new gasket. i put the crank seals in it for him after he could not get it to start, told im that the 2 stroke would not start if it leaked.i have rebuilt my sea rayder with a 120 sportjet 2 stroke. the jlo flywheel is confusing me a little bit has a mark in yellow and 3 marks all together and 180 out has 2 marks the motor turns clockwise and their are 2 marks on the block ( fam housing ) the number 1 cylinder has the 2nd and 3rd notch were it says start on the block and number 2 cylinder is different it only has 2 notches . what the heck does all this mean i really dont know but the motor is off turning by hand and using the battery test light and this is all i can say before i ramble on about this .

I'm going from memory here, but I think there should only be two marks on the flywheel and one cast into the fan housing. You set the initial timing with the test light and then you can check it with a timing light (low speed before the advance mechanism moves).
