Does anybody have a noise that sounds like a machine gun when loading the engine as in turning coming from the clutch?I even bought a new clutch at $454 bucks and the sound is the same.I have 20 inch tracks(Rubber) and when I turn and load the engine up I get a machine gun sound from the driver clutch.I ve tried everything I can with the clutch(Bushings,Weights,Blocks,Key)so I figured if I put a new complete clutch It would clear it.When the machine was new it did not make this noise. It seems to be in sink with the engine RPM.Could it be piston slap?Motor has 400 hours. |

Andre, what engine do you have? Have you tried running it with the clutch removed? That would be the easiest way to find if it is the clutch at all. G |

Hi Gregg,I have the 20 HP Kawasaki Engine..When idleing or going straight there is no noise. It is only when working the engine hard...But tomorrow I,ll experiment a little...Andre |

Are you sure it isnt loose idler chains jumping the sprockets? The idleing and no noise when going straight makes me think it would be idler chains. The only other thing I can think of is make sure belt has the required amount of deflection(as per the manual). |

I would also look into vibration from the muffler gaurd also,I have heard some noise from this before.I would think the noise isnt the clutch since you changed it and it makes the same noise. |

Alas the bitter truth,,,I removed the clutch and the same noise was still detected.....By accelerating the throttle quickly It became clear that the chattery noise was from within the engine. It amazes me how much the sound resembles the sound if the nylon blocks were loose and slapping around in the clutch.I hope the Dealer would entertain a refund.I still need all new chains.Has anyone noticed the chains can wear into the bottom side of the belly cross tubes. So...I now think its piston slap(or wrist pin). Thanks Gregg for the tip.1995 Conquest with 400 hours,,needs new chains and has begun piston slap....great....I think I,m going to put the Kawasaki 27 hp in it.Anybody kwow where I could get a good deal?...Regards Andre |

Bummer,Andre...was hoping to help eliminate this as problem, then maybe some other argo owners could have helped find a solution that would have been less expensive.I don't know but 400hrs did seem like a lot. What kind of oil do you run?I am restoring an old hustler I run Castrol in my truck but I hear good words about Mobil 1 synthetic.Kinda leaning that way. Yes,.Mobil 1 is a high quality oil..Right up there with Royal Purple.I use Mobil 1 in my 05 Mustang.....About the Kawasaki Engine,I,ve heard it said by several people that this motor runs too cold.Last year I replaced the thermostat but there was no difference in temp.If this is true..I could see how the pistons may not expand enough and slap around causing them to wear.I primarily use it in the winter which may also contribute to the temp issue. The temp guage reads 100 but I,ll have to check if its C or F.Another factor which may have contributed was that the previous owner(My Father) ran a heavy oil in it because the oil pressure light used to flicker on when idling.I,ve since raised the idle and no longer get the light allthough its sometimes difficult to shift.I suppose I could change the pistons but I,d want to get on top of the temp issue. I cant say I,ve ever seen a Hustler up here in Northern Ontario. We,ve had Amphicats and Tera Jets and Argos.I,m also restoring a 1972 PlayCat.Andre |

I always thought thermostats would restrict or regulate water flow through an engine.Cat Equip calls them regulators on their parts lists. But after watching engines run on a dyno where I work(the coolant is recirculated through a large tank). It could be seen that the engine heats up to temp then the thermostat opens, the hot coolant is pumped into radiator as cold stuff moves into block reaching and cooling thermostat which closes and the cycle repeats. So there is not a constant coolant flow through the engine block.Once I saw that and asked the guy that runs the dyno about it I was told not to feel like a moron, just about everybody is mistaken on this.So anyhow you should ask whoever sells you the next engine about correct thermostat for the temperatures where YOU ride. And another thing REALLY BAD THINGS HAPPEN when you put a flame such as a torch to a thermostat.HOLY $#^& YIKES...
