Riding my recent purchase of '96 Max4 with Kohler 20... next thing I know, clutch jumps off the shaft coming from the tranny and groves the side of the tub... couldn't re-align the two in the brush (even though everything appered to line up) and had to be towed out . The clutch is just loose and hanging there. I was able to get belt off easily. What ever was keeping the thing on is somewhere in the tub, but as I couldn't even get it put back on the spindle, I gave up looking for the retainers.

Any tips?

Also trying to find repair and owners manuals for the '96 MaxIV.

Everything was going great until this happened.

I hope I can get it running again soon!

It sounds like the trans input shaft may be broken. Take a close look and see what is actually disconnected and we can give you more info on what it will take to repair.

Thanks for the help, Brandon.

Trans input shaft is only about 3 inches out past the sprocket... looks short but it doesn't seem broke. I can get it pretty well seated on the shaft, but whatever took up the shaft-shaped space inside the actual clutch wheel was completely empty. No cap, no bolt, no nothing. I need to know what I am missing as far as parts. Is there another threaded and keyed shaft that goes inside the clutch as well? Are the presumed missing cap, washers and bolt parts I can get from Napa?

Hi Sean, I talked to you on the phone the other day. I hope that helped solve the problem, if not just call me again and we'll go over it.

Sean
All you need a Hardware store bolt and a washer, nothing special. Lance

Thanks. $4.00 at Napa and I am off running again. Of course I had to take the thing apart to fix it, but I greased up the chains and changed the tranny fluid out.

Now it runs twice as good as it ever did. I guess that "floating" clutch problem I had was really robbing me of HP.

Thanks to all who helped me out! I took photos of the repairs so I will post some to help the next guy out.

Line the key and hole up and push the two parts together, wiggle them or tap them with a rubber mallet. Beforehand, remove any burrs, mushrooming, or rust with a file. step two

Cheers to the Northern riders in Norway! I live in Alaska. We know about the "slow boat" up here, too!
