I was having trouble starting my '96 20hp Max IV (choke cable was stuck in the "off" position). When I rectified this it did fire up, however the manifold intake became white and icy. The motor would not throttle correctly and she chocked out. What is the deal? It is a brand new Kohler carb, installed by the prior owner. |

Sounds like carb icing. It can happen if the conditions are right. |

Sean, I use my max 4 with a 25hp. kohler in some pretty cold conditions. You can buy a anti icing kit from the Kohler prts dept. 3 types available, 1 rubber triangular plugs that plug off cold air from entering the air cleaner box. 2 sheet metal plate that slips under air cleaner ,does the same thing as 1. 3 hot air kit plate goes over exhaust and has a tube that feeds hot air into air cleaner. I use the plt. under the air cleaner about $38 bucks will post picture if you like, If I knew what it looked like I would have made it my self before buying I run an emergecy cable release it is nothing more than wing nut that holds cable to the motor, when it freezes just loosen by hand set choke start then put cable back in original position ,lubing the cable with marvel mystery oil helps too. |

Sean, photos for de-icing kit should be self explanitory. Bevel head screw run into top of wing nut and chisel checked in place. Notch in air cleaner side for tab which reminds you its there. This set up ran good at 5 below 0 just fine.Plate has 2 tabs with holes that match boss on side of fan housing to secure, although it won't go any where with the cover on |

If anybody lives in the northeast they may have icing problems given cold humid conditions .Don't forget the Kohler motor shoves cold air and snow in the air cleaner. If you noticed the pics my air filter cover had to be repainted as the snow and humidity rusted the top the hold down stud was replaced with a stainless steel stud because the O.E.M.rusted pretty bad .Maybe the late model 4's with the engine covers that have less exposure help heat things up but the early wire mesh models offer a little more free air. I'm sure Kohler knows this and offers 3 ways to heat the carb. |
