Hi All, I was checking my bug over after a quick ride and noticed some fresh oil on the block (right above the oil filter mount). I see a hairline crack right above the oil filter mount, and when the engine is turned off oil is coming out the crack. not lots but enough to scare the willies out of me. the engine is a Briggs-Stratton, 16 Hp. My question: is there an easy fix for this, or am I looking for a new engine block? |

Depends on exactly what the leak/crack is. There is an oil pressure galley passage in that area, running from the filter over to the flywheel side of the engine. That would leak more while running that shut off though.. There have been lots of block patching done, even large holes from thrown rods, etc. Either welding or epoxy, etc. You probably need a closer examination.. clean it off and look for the first sign of wetness. |

Thanks, I'll check it out more carefully. I see a bit of oil (more like a wetness) when its running. Then when I shut it off, I see it coming out of that crack. Like I said, its a hairline crack, so i'll check out the eoxy idea first, then spot welding. |
