Stupid question, where is the adjustment for the idle on the 23hp Vanguard in my Frontier? Once the motor run a little hot I have a hard time putting it in reverse, it grinds. If it sits idling for 4-5 minutes then there's no problem. I'm assuming it might be idling a little to fast. If that doesn't solve it I'll bring it to the dealer for some adjustments. Thanks |

Idle adjustment is on throttle plate assy, underside air cleaner, the screw that has the spring on it. Phillip Osborn LA |

So just pop off the air cleaner assembly and it should be visible or do I even need to remove it? |

No under whole air cleaner assy , on the throttle plate assembly, a easy way to find the adjustment is to open throttle (engine not running) look at the linkages UNDER aircleaner assembly and look at the part that stop the linkage back at idle (rest) there will be an adjustment to make the linkage go more or less, It is in the area of the governer. Hope this helps By the way where do you live? Always looking for a new ridding buddy. Phillip Osborn LA |

Looks like I'll need a diagram or somthing cause I can't find it. I don't see an adjustment screw. The "wheel" where the throttle cable is attached springs back agaisn't a metal bracket, not an adjustment screw!? No luck on the Briggs web site either. |

Steve That version has the "bend to adjust" arm. The governor spring is attached in two places, one to the throttle plate and second to a bracket arm made on to cooling shroud, this bracket (on shroud) should be bent in towards spring (giving less spring tension) to reduce idle. Bend arm very little as it will not take much See you Thanks Richard Clark ROUTE6x6 See my ATV parts website (listed below) for more ATV parts. I found the adjustment screw and you're right Roger, it's on the opposite side of the throttle linkage. So I removed the plastic cover plate, used my wifes mirror on her makeup compact and managed to get the screwdriver in there after doing a bunch of backward maneuvres because everything is backward in the mirror. Turn the screw a bit and the engire idles faster, good I got the right screw, turn a bit in the other direction, nothing, a little more, still nothing, a little more, *ping* the screw and spring goes flying. I look around in the tub, no, they stayed somewhere in the engine. I can hear them rattle in the shroud when I shake it. Hopefuly they'll find there way out after a ride this week end or the dealer can find it when it goes it for it's first service. But it didn't doo anything for my idle. |

Steve It did not idle down because you have to bend the bracket as screw does not have enough travel. Try to follow my previous post to set idle lower. Thanks Richard, I should have listened to you in the first place. That worked, now I'll see this weekend if it solved my grinding issue and hopefuly at the end of my ride I'll have a bolt and a spring at the bottom of the tub! |

Steve,If the screw and spring went inside the cooling shroud, they will get attached to the magnets on the flywheel, possibly causing damage. You may want to pull shroud off if you suspect they went in there. Eddie |

Eddie that was my concern also. I have adjusted the idle on a Frontier without bending anything. I guess mine just happened to have the correct bend with the screw to far in. There seems to be a lot of room in the standard for adjusting these things. Most Argos I get need an idle/mixture adjustment. Recently things have improved but it is annoying since they are so touchy with the perfect idle. |
