Alright I have a 1997 Max II with a 14hp B&S V-twin. If anyone has the same model or very similar you could be a big help to me. Please.
The last person to work on it messed some stuff up and now i need some help getting it back right.
First off the key switch wont start or turn it off. I suspect that it it the green wire that runs through the loom to the back but isn't hooked to anything backthere and I can't find any place where it should hook to?
Next there are wires from the (?magnetos) which each have a diode which looks to be home soldered in, with hot melt glue coating them for insulation and water proofing. One of the wires is yellow solid wire, and the other is a grey braided wire. Niether one is hooked to anything, and I don't see any where to hook them to.
Next there is a metal box with circiutry sealed in epoxy. which has 2 yellow and one red coming from it. the red one is hooked to a conector which runs to the wire loom to the front. One yellow wire is cut and not hooked to anything, the other yellow is ran and hooked somewhere under the starter (couldnt quite tell where) and there is another wire not hooked to anything coming from under the starter also. I assume it should be hooked to the cut yellow?
When I start the motor (by arcing the starter terminals) it surges while idling and while driving. And it seems to not go very fast, almost like the rev limiter is set very low and it hits it at about 10mph.
It has fresh oil, filters, plugs, gas, and a cleaned out fuel system.
Any help I could get is greatly appriciated. Its been about 7 years since I'v been on a six wheeler and i'm ready to get this one going soon! Thanks!

Ryan

Sounds like you have a few problems, I do not know why people do repairs like that, now you have to fix it.....

Wire from magneto goes to the epoxy box (Voltage regualtor) output from this box goes to + on battery. This charges battery.

There should be diodes but they are in line from coils to kill terminal on side of blower housing, in which is attached the kill (ground) from key. These diodes should be UNDER the blower housing.
Not homemade items.

Surges is most likely a dirty carb, clean all the carbs jets and passages.

A MAX II should run about 22mph give or take.

Hope this helps, you are welcome to call us, We will be open Tue morning at 8 am, Mike, head man in the shop is a expert on electrical.

Thanks

Yes its the original motor.

I have some pictures but I can't find the camera cord now! lol

Is there supposed to be a second epoxy box that may be missing? As the one I have has 2 yellow and one red from it, red goes to a conector which has black and white wire then runs towards front. One yellow runs under starter somewhere, and the other is cut and loose. But there is a second wire under the starter not hooked to anything. Where do the wires that run under the starter lead to? Can I assume that I can hook up the cut wire to the other unhooked wire under the starter?

The leads with the diodes soldered in are ran under the red pull start/ shield, which i have removed. theyre zip tied to the aluminum tube, ?intake maybe? but theyre wouldnt be anywhere to hook them to on the one epoxy box i have.

Don't have time to call and work on it today but i would like to call your shop if i get time later in the week. Thanks

ziped to the intake sounds correct to me, take some pictures and post for us to see

The covers just off to work on it and I had to fix the pullstarter.

Still cant find what the 2 wires under the starter are, they go right up under the starter and then I cant reach or see where they go. One is hooked to a yellow from the epoxy box the other is unhooked.
Not much luck with posting pics but click on the blue <img> thing...

This pic also shows the two wires that come from magnetos with the diodes... theres no place to hook them?

This is just a pic of the whole Max

Yes it runs

Thanks Richard, after talking to Mike I got some things figured out and ordered some B&S parts from the lawn shop. I'll be ordering a few things from you soon too.
Still got a few things to work on, but at least this is almost fixed. Thanks everyone.
