We were out riding the Max II this weekend, and the engine started running a bit rough. It sounded like the governor was cycling on and off, and did so regardless of RPMs or speed. The throttle felt a bit less responsive, and when I shut it off one time, it backfired. It had been running like a top before this. It is a 2003 Max II that has about 40 hours on it total. Any ideas? |

Did you just fuel the machine? THe first thing I would look at is a little carb or fuel additive. You may have had bad fuel. How hot was your weather? |

I had filled it up about 2 weeks ago with fresh gasoline treated with Stabil, and had driven it some since then without problem. It didn't start acting up until about an hour into the ride. The temperature was in the upper 80s. |

I would start on the obvious. You may have water in the fuel. Add some carb and or fuel cleaners and run it a while. Check the fuel filter, spark plug gaps. air cleaner etc. I was thinking that if your temps were hot that you may had some vapor locking going on. I am not sure high 80's would do it. |

It could be yet another clogged carb. It seems the Briggs engines (14hp-18hp) are becoming all to famous for this. It's probably the pilot jet that is plugged up. You've had the main jet problem before. That one is most common and causes the engine to barely run/not run unless the choke is pulled out. When the pilot jet clogs it seems to do what you are descibing right now. The pilot is the small brass screw that is removed with a strait screw driver. You have to remove the top of the carb to access it. That's my best guess with the given info. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pull the top of the carb and check that pilot jet, Brandon. If that doesn't do the trick, I'll go to the basics (filters, plugs, etc.) As I have never been into a Briggs carb before, does anyone know of an on-line source for a blowapart schematic? |
