Hi all, I stripped my max II for servicing: lifted engine out, changed chains, checked cahnaged bearings, etc. All that good stuff. Did not take out the tranny. When it came time to put everything back together, I found that it was really hard, sometimes impossible to shift. You could shift Forward, or Reverse, but not necessarily both ways. I read the manual, loosened the small gear chains, cursed lots, drank more and finally got it done. Now I'm out and about, but I still find it hard to shift. Seems like engine races, sometimes a grinding noise, esp. when trying to put the beast in reverse. I don't remember screwing anything up...anybody got any ideas what i did wrong and how I can fix it? |

Wilfred-I'm not sure how to help you. Everybody who first learns to drive a Max or any machine with a t-20 tranny grinds the gears till they learn the tricks of shifting them. Did you drive the machine before you stripped it down? Did it shift OK then? The engine must be at slow idle, sticks held back to "neutral" position, even then it is not uncommom to have to "jiggle" the machine, especially with a new tranny. W. Philip Cox |

Actually I've been driving this little piece of heaven for a few years, and have taken it apart before. Never had this problem. I've turned down the idle and while it helped a bit, not that much. I saw on one of the other posts about belt tension - I'll check that when I get back in the bush. |

Wilfred, you might check your linkage to make sure the diamond part of the shifter goes all the way forward and all the way back and that both shifters are in the same position as the lever moves from forward to reverse and visa versa. Also, have you pulled the shifters to see if there is gunk in the crack. The o-ring keeps stuff out of the tranny, but above the o-ring can get corroded and shifting ease is compromised. If you pull the shifters out, put lots of Vaseline around the o-ring and I put a glob on top to completely fill the groove around the shifter. |

Wilfred, With your experience and following the advice of Fred Sowerwine you will no doubt solve the problem. Fred has walked me through every question that I have had in the last four years. Good luck and please let us know what you found out. W. Philip Cox |

Thanks, guys. I will follow Fred's advice. I think that he's likely right because I experienced the problem with shifting when I first put the beast back together again, BEFORE I had the engine hooked up. |

I could be mistaken but I remember someone telling me or reading somewhere not to put Petroleum Jelly Or (Vaseline)on rubber products because it will break rubber down?? I know I remember someone telling me not to put Vaseline on Condoms a for sure no no I'm not sure if the O- ring and condom are made from the same material or not but if it were me I would try using some other type of lube. |

Well Howard, the skid steer repair manual says (on the assembly instructions page - very first thing): "NOTE: Use petroleum (vasoline) to hold gaskets and thrust washers in position and to lubricate seals and "o" rings during assembly." That's good enough for me. |

I did a brief research on vaseline and it's uses there are lots of them. Apparently it is ok to use it on O-Rings it is a different type of rubber. Just DON'T USE IT ON NEOPRENE RUBBER PRODUCTS as it will break the rubber down. The Inventer of vaseline even ate a table spoon full of the stuff every day according to him attributing to his long life of I think it was 96 years. |

Vaseline has been used for decades in automatic transmission assembly. Hadn't heard about the neoprene issue before. |
