Hi, I am getting very frustrated with my new investment. I got an amphicat. Was running fine for 2 days then lost spark. Got the new points today and put them in, but they do not seem to be lobing. Put the old points back on and same problems. What am I missing? Could someone PLEASE help me. Thanks. |

Don't get frustrated. It's just a gremlin, and you'll find it. Oddly, I lost spark on my JLO 295 for no apparent reason, and it was the ignition coil. It had great spark at the plug when it was out, but wouldn't fire in the cyl. under compression. By "lobing" do you mean opening and closing? A silly question, but did you make sure you put the cam back on the flywheel that opens/closes the points? You have to adjust the points through the window in the flywheel, which is no easy task, especially with the engine in the machine. Rotate the flywheel until you can see the points through the window. Loosen the holding screw, and open the points a bit. If the cam is "working" and in place, they'll stay open, and you'll be able to see them close after you tighten the holding screw and rotate the flywheel again. This is just to make sure they're "lobing". Now go back and gap them to the right spec. The manual lists a point gap between 0.014" to 0.118" (yeah, that's one-one-eight...a bit extreme...) You should put a little lube on the wear-arm on the points. A little petroleum jelly will ensure they don't wear prematurely and close up 'yer gap. Let us know how you make out... ~m |

turn the engine by rope or electric start and you should get on the light blue cable 6 v a.c. try secondary colil directly with 6 v batery and touch the ligh blue cable to obtain direct spark if not, or yellow spark secondary coil is shot did you hook up de negative terminal of seccondary coil to engine frame?? |

I have 2 yellow wires coming from the housing where the points wire comes from. Where are they to be hooked up to? They are from the coils? Thanks. |

inside jlo 295 are 2 coils one ignition magneto with a single black cable and produce 6 v a.c., the other magneto, the charging magneto produce 12v a.c. with the 2 yellow cables yellow cable go to rectifier in order to convert ac into dc. |

Lynne, You replaced everything, but did you make sure that the points are actually opening and closing? Once you make sure they're opening and closing, make sure the gap is within the specs above. If it ran and had spark before, this can't be anything very serious. Like Isaac says, make sure the secondary coil (outside the engine, mounted to the back) is grounded with the short wire. Make sure the plug cap and the wire itself is screwed into the coil far enough. There really aren't any more parts to replace! |

Ok, Here is the deal now. Took the motor back out, readjusted the points, just to make sure. Checked connections at the condensor. Put everything back in place and still no spark to the plug. However, we are getting a good blue spark from the blue wire coming from the points. Once we connect it into the ignition coil (new from 6x6) there is no more spark! Could the new coil be bad or something else? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE A ZOMBIE SECCONDARY COIL however find a 6 volt batery and "touch2 direclty the seccondary coil...REMEMBER THAT jlo produces only 6v ac. if you received a 12 v coil you are stucked. |

So you are saying that the secondary coil needs to be 6 volt? I have 3 of them here including the one that came off when it was running. None of them work. As soon as we hook it up and connect to the plug - no spark. I really need some help here. Thanks. |

jlo 295 ignition coil produces 6v ac. when you turn the engine you should read intermitent 6 v ac lecture ( due to point action) unless you bring the read from the single black output cable from ignition magneto. try those colils direct with a 6v batery ( touching positive terminal as point will do in order to check for blue spark. yellow spark isn't good signal!. did you insulated properly all conection from points?? anything that touch frame on the positive flow will kill the ignition. don't give up fun is when aatv is bouncing. an aatv with engine shot doesn't bounces!!. therefore keep on it to resolve. |

Most small engines will read about 5K ohms between the spark plug lead and ground. If the resistance is low, the coil is probably bad. |

plugs can foul in ten years or ten minuets, is that a used plug? what did you gap that plug at? try the plug wire near but not touching ground when you zap the coil with that six volt battery. that eliminates a bad plug as cause of the problem. |

you put screwdriver on plug wire?, better to put tongue!1 ( just kidding!!) ignition system on jlo 295 goes on the follow steps: a) ignition magneto produces 6v ac thru single black cable that goes to point and condensor. those cable or conection should be insulated from frame/ground. b) points open and close to produce signal to the seccondary coil via light blue cable. c) seccondary coil amplified the signal in order to obtain spark d) spark plug jump the spark trhu electrode gap. you should check system from a thru d in order to know what's wrong. DON'T GIVE UP YET!! |

(C.5)Hi Voltage has to travel threw the secondary cable! maybe try that cable on an automotive distributer as a coil wire, or better yet just chainge it out now, a secondary cable cant be that hard to find, the end cap should just unscrew and your new wire just screws into the coil too. maybe the old one would work if you cut an inch off each end? (no spark from the screwdriver to ground should mean the coil or secondary wire) |

David Berger OK; since you are the expert, you already should know that when system was shorted, that instant, is when the coil could have been fried, maybe, maybe not. By the way do you know anything about the English language too? Ever hear of a book where you look up words in which you do not know how to spell? Arron} |

sounds like an interesting book Arron, whats it called? most old timers here can tell you that this is the best i have bin able to spell since i started posting here in 1998, and many have commented that somehow they could read my spelling even as messed up as it is. i lernd this crappy spelling in our public scool system! knowone here should trust there public school system to teach there kids. all with kids in public schools should keep a cloase eye on how much attention you children get. dont let anyone fool you, they run schools like a buisness and indevidual time is unproffitable! thats bullshit and they screwed alot of kids in my town thoughs years. that said im not going to worrie none about your comment. manny people who can spell far better than i post terrable gaffs because they dont even take the time to proof-read there text! And by the way lynne has never writen about shorting anything with a screw driver. mearly that it was used to extend the secondary line so as to vue the spark! thanks for your helpfull advice though. |

My first comments were not directed to David Berger. He is the one who stated "please post if you can be of help, otherwise please viset another thred" to me. I am sorry he never learned to spell, I guess he is just mad and now wants to be my board NAZI. Anyway if he would bother read my profile, he would see my last name is Arron. I joined this board years ago and posted a lot, then went to Iraq for 4 years (yes 4) to defend our right to be free, now he is my board NAZI. Ha Ha. Maybe he would be happy if I resign up? Now that I am back I will be using this board a lot, I guess I am a junior because my post are so dumb, but I can spell. Maybe you guys should ask route6x6 why my board is not working like yours. Anyway, have a happy 4th and remember many men and women have died to give you the right to bitch. Arron. sorry: Chris M Arron |

yah phillip, as usual il be there. but as has bin becomeing usual i might not bring my machine. it's still in the ground up repair stage. i had a standby idea but theres probly not time enouph to get my attex ready ether. and all it needs is an engine chainge. i just got the safety sticker renewed on my van. im still trying to get a friend to join me on the trip to help me tape the event. it would be nice if id used the other 360 days in the year to fix the buggys so they'd be ready. the third option if someday i have the money, might be the addition of a real brakeing system in my terra jet. then id bring that with me too copperridge. |

David, Yes,too many jobs. I spent the whole day yesterday cleaning my new machine from "the ride". Needed to tighten the idler chains, put a new fuse in the bilge pump (5 amp. is too small) put a 10. It rained 5 times on Sat. and some hail and a 5 minute hurricane,I set the tent up here in the sun and hosed it out. The poor old Max sits waiting for minor parts replacement. Where does the time go. I painted my rims again and loaded the machine into the trailer as it started to rain this morning. Ah well I needed a break anyway. W. Philip Cox |

Phillip/Dave... I'll be down at Olean at least for Saturday, maybe Friday night? Who knows. I just finished spiffing up a different machine I just picked up. It's a 75'ish RIM complete with the original Chaparral two stroke. It's really a fun machine, and it's a lot different than the little squirty Attex. It's like driving a school bus. I've just about broken in the new chains, so hopefully it'll make a decent showing on the trails(?). If I take it to Olean, it'll likely be the only machine, since I can't safely fit anything else on the trailer.... A bunch of us are going to the Ledges ride July 26-28, so it might be a small showing at the Olean event... ~m |
