I have installed a recently (completely serviced and at Superwinch) X1 Superwinch on my Max. I have had it linked through a circuit breaker and currently direct to battery. I am also running 2 batteries on board (so plenty of juice). Problem is when I activate the winch (by turning the handle for cable in or out) it runs very slow for about 3 to 4 seconds and stops. Wait a minute or two and same, regardless of direction. Nothing is hot or is binding. The winch has been back to the factory 2x and has checked out OK. New Circuit breaker and being wired direct makes NO difference. I am stuck here and could use some advise? Please? Contact me off list at BlueKnightNJ@prodigy.net Thanks Bill

I'll try a stab at this, how about running the winch directly from a good battery with a pair of booster cables. That will eliminate any bad connectors anywhere in your present wiring. If that works then you know your own wiring/circuit breaker need attention. The onlt other thing I can think of is bad contacts under the handle. God luck let us know the outcome. |

Great minds think alike. Thank you. As soon as the weather breaks I am going to try that out and YES I will let you know if that was it. The Superwinch people could not have been more helpful and I can not thank them enough for what they did gratis. If that should be the problem, I am wondering what will my alternative since I am already running 2 batteries on board. (a 3rd battery?) |

Bill,WHAT GAUGE WIRE ARE YOU RUNNING?I have a super winch 1,500# cap.with a double line pull for heavy pulls.Can pull my max4 in gear with trax in freezing weather up a mild grade with the motor off.I run 8 gauge front to back of the machine from the batt..I can use the winch front or back via a recepticle on both ends.Hope you are not running those batteries tied together?Hook up both pos. cables but float the neg. when your other batt. is dead or just jump off to start.I have 2 batteries just alternate ground cable to keep the both batteries charged ,have a spring clip to ground just to jump off if 1 batt. is dead or do tie both together temporarly for a heavy pull. |

Sounds like a wiring issue.
But first things first.
#1. Run the winch (no load needed) from you car battery, or another working source without the circuit breaker. You can attach the contacts with jumper cables like erich said.
#2 if the above works, run the winch (no load needed) from "above" with the circuit breaker inline.
#3 if the above works, run the winch (no load) with circuit breaker, from your Max batteries. If that works, problem solved.
If the above first two are working, then you have a problem with your max system/winch setup. More likely, you have a problem with your connections. However, this could also be your batteries on the max, which if the connections are good then the batteries are pooched (and no.. don't add a third battery - replace the bad batteries/battery). If it's your connections, simply clean, make sure you have used the right sized connectors, and firmly attach to the battery.
What dennis stated is correct, and you can supply more "juice" to your winch by adding a second line, however this will not explain your initial problem.

May I suggest using a volt meter as close to the winch as possible. It should be battery voltage when the winch is not running and slightly less with it running. If the battery voltage drops significantly at the winch, put the meter on the battery and see if the battery voltage drops the same. If the battery drops the same, its a bad battery. If the battery stays up, its a bad connection. Then you can use a voltmeter between the + lead at the winch and + terminal on the battery. If there is a voltage between them when running the winch, you have a bad connection. The same on the - side of the winch to the - side of the battery. This must also be done while the winch is drawing current(running). |

Well sports fans, here is the outcome of my winch situation. (sorry for delay in responding)
It was the batteries after all. The 2 on board batteries I have install, had enough juice to start the Max but not enough to sustain the winch for more than a few seconds at a clip. Once I hooked up a heavy duty battery charger, all was well. As for the batteries, I have used a 2amp trickle charger with a on/off timer for a week now and they are good as new! Thanks to all for advise.
