Mike, When you can only get one side to work, are you speaking of the transmission? If this is the case, the chances are that there is a "nub" broken off on the small diamond-shaped shifters on the top of the transmission. The shifters engage forward/reverse on the transmission, and with few violent jerks (jerk as in "motion", not the person) the nubs or dowels that slide the shift collar can break off. The shifters are held in with a "C" clip, that you take off, then the shifter pulls straight up. Check them out first. If they're both OK, I would check for an adjustment on the transmission. After a long time w/o maintenance, the bands can become out of adjustment, and won't allow you to steer. When you say "putting the wheel back on", are you refering to the flywheel on the engine, or a tire/wheel combo. If you took the flywheel off to check the points to fix the no-spark condition, there is really only one way to put the wheel back on, as long as the keyway is still there and not missing or broken. If you took the stator plate off, there's a chance that the timing may be a litte bit off, too. More specifics will help us to help you... good luck! ~mike |
