ok so i have a 1996 max 2 with a 16hp vangaurd briggs. the guy i bought it from said that it had tons of power would carry a passanger with ease no problems ever blah blah blah.... ive had it two weeks broke every chain but two. i think ive got the problem down on that one though (worn sprokets) also without the chain there is slight play in the sprokets they move slightly back and fourth on the axle normal or no? does anyone know how much the cost of replacing all sprokets may be? my biggest problem is that everywhere i look people are saying 4 to 6mph on water 25mph on land. on water i cant see that im moving much faster than a snail no joke maybe 1mph if that! on land i clocked in at 16mph going down a slight but noticable hill, and on just straight level land maybe 10 - 13. with a passanger tires stop spinning up steep hills feels like major power loss also theres a big popping sound. by my self it can barley turn on concrete what could these problems be? i looked at the tranny fluid and it looks dirty i know thats not the cause but maybe a rebuild is due? i dont know.... the first two weeks of owning this thing is my fist two weeks of knowledge on them so please anyone advice?? thanks to all JUSTIN

Justin check with richard clark, owner of this site, he can give you a quote over the phone on new or good used sprokets and posably chain!
and try calling for the same quote on new parts directly from recreatives ind.
both can swiftly send you the sprokets sets you need, but you should take a good close look at them, open up the body and chech each one if you can. this means even the jack shaft set.

this also means look to be certin the noise isent only a loose chain adjuster.

if the quotes a little more than you feal comfortable shelling out just now you can alwase pick the worst ones and replace them first,
and then later as you can aford too.

the poping noise is almost certinly a sign of worn sprokets and or loose or broken chain adjusters.
check the chain adjusters for week or broken springs and torn up teeth ect..ect..,

On the rair ocation when i put a new chain on i used a half link in it and laiter was able to remove the half link on a trail if it became nesesary much easyer than it would be to remove a whole link on a trail.
when you adjust your chain it should be a little loose rather than tight because tight chains ware at an increased rate over a slightly loose one.

speed wise check the width of your drive belt!
shold be 1 3/16" wide(one and three sixteenths)
if 1/8th" less it requires replacement. ect..ect..

And check the owner registry here on route 6x6 to see if there may be more 6x6 owners nearby in your state you might hook up with to ride or for maintanence help, ect..ect..
where are you from?

David, excellent advice! For water speed check are the tire original or a real chevron style?

Check drive and driven clutch along with the belt.

I've had some low power Vanguards come in and they had eith blown head gaskets or bent push rods.

Richard is a great source of information on this problem.

In addition to the good advice above, make sure that the tire chevrons are mounted to turn in the right direction. Standing at the front of the machine and looking at the tires, the tire chevrons should point in this /\ direction for maximum water speed.

the tires are on the right direction there is one tire that isnt original its from tractor supply it has a v style with nobbies on the side but i dont think that would make a ton of differance. i took everything appart and i looked at all the sprokets the rear two have a forward lean on the teeth so what i did was rotate them so now they lean backwards. the jack shaft was pretty torn up it had some metal chunks taken out of it so i filled them down with a rotery tool. the belt looks like its in really good shape but seemed a little loose so i pulled the motor back some i heard that its only supposed to have 1-2 in between the belts when you try to sqeeze them together.... i hope thats right. and as for the chain adjusters ha ha ha wow yeah there pretty worn out like maybe the original adjusters, most of the plastic on them is gone! is there anyplace that would give me a trade in value on my 16 hp briggs so something like a 23 hp wouldnt cost so much...? also im from joshua tx its about 15-20min south of fort worth

Goodyear Rawhide 3s are the correct chevron type tire.

The Rawhide III tires are not the best swimming tires. When you have an advertised speed that would be with the best tires for that application. Often people buy used machines and the direction of the original tires has been changed or the style of tires has been changed to something completely different such as knobby or mud tire. The tire that is a v style with knobby sides won't swim. In fact I had a machine with them and the machine actually swam backwards while in forward gear.

the side that has the new tractor supply tire does pull(to the left) if i got tires that were faster in the water would i lose traction on the land? i do alot of tree trunk climbing and muddin.... just things you would find out in the deep woods (river beds, lifted tree roots, downed trees, thick brush, steep hills, thick gumbo mud) i go threw that stuff almost anytime i go out on it.

It just depends upon what you are expecting in the water. It will still be somewhat slow compared to a boat. For offroad in the mud the Rawhide III is a good choice. For in the water and off-road the 21" Rawhides are a good choice. So it depends upon what a person wants ands is willing to spend. My persona favorite is the 21" Rawhide on the Max II. But I wouldn't go ot and replace a god set of Rawhide IIIs to get a little more water speed unless the Rawhide IIIs were worn out. For where you are riding I'd stay away from the softer chevron tires or Runamucks. Are you holding the control levers forward when driving? Since you have been working on the chains are your clutch and torque converter opening and closing as they should?

the metal peices that the belt rests on? if thats it then i think they are when i give it trottle the belt raises by the motor and i think that they one by the tranny sinks.... i dont know if thats what your talking about... when i am driving i dont have to push the sticks forward i just give it gas... now i could pull the sticks back and it will slow down and high rev

Yes that is the clutch and torque converter. When you drive it forward try pushing forward on the sticks and see if it goes any faster.

There are so many factors that would be up to you to decide; available funds, pull start with electric start. Who is available locally for parts.

Both are good engines.

Justin, Did you get your power issue figured out?

The Vanguard can run smoothly on just one cylinder or in poor tune.

I was out in one yesterday and it was low on power.
It was slow and could not climb hills. I checked the air filter and it was filthy. I then pulled the rear plug wire and there was no difference in how it ran. I removed the plug and it was fouled. I put on a new filter, and put in new plugs, and fresh fuel.

It ran like a totally different machine.

Sometimes in the colder weather people will start it with the choke then walk away and leave the choke on for a while and foul the plugs. The dirty filter didn't help and most likely contributed to the fouled plug.

This machine also came from Texas.

i tryed pulling the plug one after the other it was a noticable but not huge differance the air filter looks like it is in ok condition i rode it last night and im having a new problem its not getting enough fuel i can drive it for a little bit and it will sputter to a stall well then i remove the gas cap seal it with my mouth and blow air into it and it will fire up and run good again for a short period of time it actaully seems like i gain power for a short period and then it goes back to normal then from normal to a stall..... i checked the fuel filter its clean.... could there be junk in the gas tank..? or can the motor not be pulling gas...? also i pushed the sticks forward and it went the same speed.

It could be several things.

Main jet in the carb dirty, dirt in the float bowl, cracked or leaky hose to the fuel pump, old dirty gas.

wow.... k even more problems well i found the reason the gas wasnt flowing it had a pinched tube . now heres the new problem ugh (sorry about all these new problems and questions) ok tonight i was floating it down about an 8-10ft creek and tried to climb out on a steep incline that was a big no no the rear vents took on alot of water and within seconds the motor was off and the max was side ways (straight up and down) and over the seat high in the water so me and two friends pulled it out i took out the plugs and turned it over to get the water in the cylinders out and cleaned it up good enough to get it running and back to the house (1/4 mile) the oil has a bit of water so i know i need to drain that but when i got it running and there was NO power at all! sometimes i would have to walk beside it just to keep it going the motor would rev up normaly but it didnt want to move.... what all do you think i should do to get it back to normal? again thanks for all your time and help
