Has anybody rigged up a GM 1 wire alternator to their briggs yet. I need more power than the stock one and I do not want to purchase the kit. I want to design a bracket and pully if nobody has attempted this yet. If you have any ideas, let me know. Mike 2001 Bigfoot |

The only way I can envision this is to take off the motor shroud, remove the recoil start(if it has one), attach a small 3-4 inch pulley to the top of the flywheel and then replace the shroud. As for fabricating a bracket to hold the alternator, space and mounting points to the motor are your only enemy. Then comes the problem of getting cool air down to the intake. I don't think there's much chance mounting it on the other side. Maybe it will cause more problems than it's worth. Do you have a price of the upgrade kit? |

Mike it's been done on a max 2 in western N.y..If you dig deep you will find it some where on this site.I saw it at copper ridge. The guy took a v-belt pully drilled a new bolt pattern in to it to match the bolt pattern on his clutch hub, made a simple brkt. to hang the alt.He lost a little power but he still was able to complete rides at Humphry and copper ridge with two people in a max 2. |

After doing some reasearch last week. I found an upgrade for the stock alternator. It is a 20 amp at 1200 RPM and 50 amp at 3600 RPM. See web site below: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/display/router.asp?docid=75809 I'm going to go to my local Briggs dealer and find out if I can upgrade the stock alternator with this one. I'll let you know. Thank you, Mike |

I started to mention that possibility, Mike, but like you don't know the details. The article talks about magnets in the stator.. not sure what they mean. The low output charging systems use magnets integral to the flywheel. Might have to buy a stator winding, regulator, and flywheel. Hope not, but will be nice to find out what fits. |

Hi Mike, I have written at length about this subject in the past. Either way you will lose significant power, 50 anps at 12 volts = 600 watts and with losses it is over 1 horsepower. I think the B&S upgraded alt is the way to go though. |

I finally got some info about upgrading to the briggs 50 amp alternator. The Briggs rep said that the 50 amp alt cannot be upgraded on any pre 2003 vanguard modles. It looks like I am gonna have to design a bracket to mount a GM 1 wire alt. I cannot believe the argo external alt kit is over $300 bucks. A GM 1 wire alt is only about $50. I'll let ya know if I think of anything different. |
