Did a search but not finding the answer for what I need about the carb on a B/S 18 HP.. I have the same problem others are with hesitation on acceleration and a back spray of gas from the carb if you run it with the air filter off. I took a long hard look at taking the carb off, the bolt on the driver side is not accesable without taking off the engine cooling shroud and the passenger side needs an open end wrench yet to be invented. Whoever designed that at B&S should be rolled in hot candy floss and dropped on an African anthill. That said, can the internal workings(jets, float, float needle, etc) be accessed by just removing the top cover off the carb. Thanks...twisted fingers. |

Yes you can clean everything you need through the top.. also take the idle mixture screw out from the side, I use Chemtool and compressed air. I fix the off idle acceleration stumble by running the idle mixture a little richer. |

Like Roger said everything can be accessed through the top except the main jet in the lower side of the float bowl. There is a plug that screws in from the outside of the carb. Remove the plug then use a screwdriver to pull the main jet. You should have the top of the carb off to see what you are doing, and you will need some needle nose pliers to put it back in place. The main jet gets easily plugged with debris that gets past the filter. When you open the top of the carb put a towel down around the carb and be very careful not to drop the float needle. I dropped one the other day and it fell down between the cylinders and now I can't find it. So I had to order a new one and the machine is down til that part arrives. Like Roger said to correct the off idle stumble make the adjustment on the side of the carb. If you have a plastic piece that limits movement you can just pop it off and turn the needle with your fingers. Most are set too lean from the factory. |

Okay, thanks a bundle for the quick response, good plan to wrap an old towel around there for a catch all, wouldn't be the first time the most critical part ended up lost. |

Okay, finally got the can of highly recommended Revive carb cleaner. Opened the carb, took out the float and needle, took out the idle needle and the other long screw in brass tube, emptied and dried out the gas, and gave it a liberal blast of this stuff and let it sit for a good hour. Went back out, took a couple of Q tips and found that most of the old solid gum/varnish had liquified and more or less just melted away. Blasted some air throught it, re applied the cleaner, let it sit some more, did that twice more and re assembled the carb. Couple of cranks, kicks and snorts 'til the bowl filled with new gas and runs a whole lot better. Found that the idle needle needed amost an extra 1/2 turn open. The hesitation is gone along with the gas backspraying from the carb. Thanks for the help. |
