I've been wondering about these types of machines for quite some time? We have three wheelers and four wheelers now but I've always been interested in the six and eight wheelers. I've never been around one to take a test ride in so I wanted to ask you guys some questions. Are they really loud with the air cooled engine. I have a 27 horsepower air cooled motor in my garden tractor and full throttle it's pretty loud. Are these as loud as that or are they more in-line with the sound of a four wheeler? I can be writing side-by-side on quads and carry on a conversation with the guy next to me. Can you do that on one of these types machines? Since they don't have any suspension, what is the ride like? Is it really bouncy? |

Jeff, Unmodified stock machines are not loud and people can carry on a conversation. The ride is not bouncy either with the tire pressure set at the proper amount. Your best bet is to find a dealer and go check them out in person. Or post where you live and see if you can meet up with a member of this board to see their machine. |

I live in southern Oregon near Klamath Falls and as far as I can tell you are not any dealers here. If someone from this area wouldn't mind taking me on a test drive, that would be great. When I look for these types of machines in classifieds or on eBay there don't seem to be many on the West Coast. Anybody have any idea why this might be? They look like such fun machines, I just can't imagine why there aren't more at West. |

These are great fun. Off road, in the water, on the sand, you name it. I live in the Seattle/Tacoma area. I would be glad to let you take it out for a spin. I would even meet you half way just for the chance to run around. |

Bill, I'm not sure why these machines aren't more popular on the west coast. The only thing I can say is that they are both (Recreatives / Argo) are east coast companies. Recreative Industries is a fairly small company and probably doesn't have the marketing $$ of the big atv manufactures. I have an older 92 Max 4. It has required Major work to get it to reliable condition. This was due to the previous owner's lack of upkeep. My point is that these machines are great fun and can do everything they are supposed to but they require a bit more general maintenance then the average 4 wheeler. In my opinion these machines are now having to compete with the UTV's that the major manufactures are making. Before, the 6/8 wheeled amphibs where just about the only 4 place side by side atv's out there. Now this is not the case. I think the amphibs are due for a leap in technology. Most of the breakdowns I feel are tied to lack of suspensions on these machines. The tires do just an ok job at taking shocks the rest of the impact it transmitted throughout the machine causing damage to the rest of the components. Although I think a suspension system would make it difficult to put tracks on them. Also with the top of the line UTV's coming in at around $12,000 either the pricing or what you get for the money for the amphibs will have to change if these companies want to survive. With that said I still love these machines. They really are a blast to ride. If you want to go fast you might consider a different type of machine. If you want to crawl under/over/through just about anything these are the machines. Mike |

one small factor related to the small off off road buggys that seams to acout for somewhat fewere machines on the west cost per say, hovercrafts are populer out there on the west coast, it isent that people just done ride out there, some just like to hover as there means of off road entertainment. |

I don't know where the idea of hover crafts is coming from. All I see out here are motorcycles, quad's, trucks, Jeeps, and the occasional sand rail or Volkswagen baja. |

Jeff, I have a '95 6x6 Argo Bigfoot running 25" Goodyear Rawhide III's at 3 psi. The more psi that are in these tires, the rougher/bouncier the ride becomes. Some people run just 1 psi, and others all the way up to 4 psi. It really depends on what you think is rough. I have a really bad back but 3 psi is just fine with me. On another note...Welcome back Skip! Storm |
