I am having a problem with my 1997 Conquest shredding alternator belts. It had 24 HRS. on it when I bought it and only has 30 now. The original belt was dry rotted and shredded when I was 3 miles back in the swamp of course. I have put 3 belts on it so far and it will make it less than a mile before it either shreds or snaps a new belt. I called Kenny Bost at Bost Argo in N.C. and he said that he has only replaced 2 in the last 28 years. The pulleys appear to be aligned and running true and turn freely without a belt on them. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. |

any chance it might be from something like a broken motor mount? i drove my maxII for several days wondering what was up with my max before discovering a broken engine mount was letting my engine flop all over while it was under tork. if your engine is pichin while under tork it might be shoveing the belt into something in the engine compartment, also it might be stressing a belt in some other way, and what about the bearings on the ALT.? maybe you could chain the machine to a tree and run it in low gear on some dirt to simulate the tork of a 1 mile ride into the backwoods. and with safety glasses you can watch whats goin on inside the engine bay. |

James, I think the alterator you are talking about is a dealer installed "factory option". If I am wrong there are lots of Argo dealers on this site who I hope will straighten me out. I think you should be able to drive with your engine cover removed to watch what is happening. like David suggests. David...how low tech..I am shocked! No engine mounted camera. no night vision goggles...No remote activation...just a tree and a chain..I sure hope you are well my friend. W. Philip Cox |

ohh don't worry im still sick, heh heh i took into concideration the time and expence involved in aquireing the tech stuff. my own colection of teck stuff for example has bin a huge burden! no theres also nothing like the expireance of a belt blowing just feet from your face that i beleave everyone should expireance first hand at least once in there lifetime. its thrilling as well as memorable! |

James we have never had a belt break either. Something is installed wrong or loose. Maybe a broken bracket. Call Ken Bost and have him fax or email you a installation instruction paper on the alternator to see if everything is in place properly. Who installed yours? There is one piece you remove when you install the alternator, it is like a little plastic funnel, near the oil filter. Maybe that is still there. If the alternator belt breaks in the field you can unplug the wires from the alternator and plug it back into the original 20 amp alternator that is still mounted on the drivers side dash. It is a 3 x3 little box. Good Luck! Becky |

You need to run a string or straight edge to see it the pulleys are in alignment. It should be close as you can get,(May have to shim with washers if it is out of alignment.)The only other thing to check would be bearings,(make sure it is not rough feeling and smooth turning. Hope this helps, Eddie |

Just a thought, check the belt path and around it. Their might be something like a small piece of metal or something that it just catches and its enough to shread it. This happened to me a couple years ago with the drive belt. Turned out to be a tiny little piece nobody would have ever thought would get close to the belt but it was just enough. |

Thanks guys, I'll try the tree trick if I can con my buddy into hanging upside down in the engine compartment. My next step would be to have the alternator tested at a shop in town and see if he can figure it out. The kit was installed at the factory I think. The folks I bought it from had every option that was available at the time put on it. |
