6x6 Friends: In response to the above messages, today Thursday we have received 6 phone calls about T-20 ATF. We at ROUTE6x6 use and recommend using 27 oz. Dextron III and 4 oz. General Motors Truck or Corvette rear end additive, this can be bought at most any auto parts shop. The 31 oz number is based on a DRY trans, which is impossible without taking apart trans, proper way to check and add fluid is to remove the two plugs on side of trans, one located at 8:00 other at 10:00 positions, pour fluid in top hole untill it begins to run out bottom hole. Be sure to reinstall plugs with the vent on the top, not on bottom. When changing some fluid, remove plugs and either lift front of machine or take a fluid pump and pump fluid out from bottom of the T-20, you just try to get as much out as possible, yes; it should have been built with a drain, but it was not....... Hope this helps, as usual you are more than welcome to call with any 6x6 needs or questions. See my ATV parts website (listed below) for more ATV parts. I have the world's largest supply of new, used and reproduction AATV parts. We have most parts for most machines. Please call on phone for details. Terms: We accept Visa. I have also used the Dextron III. The Max owner's manual from Recreatives does say Type F so that is what I've always recommended to others. |

I'll offer a little insight about fluids, from automatic transmission experience, none from t-20 experience. Decades ago there was: type F for ford/mercury products type A/Dexron for GM eventually converged into Dexron/Mercon which is what in current. Plus some chrysler and import fluids. The friction materials and hydraulic pressures varied a little in trans design. What I wanted to get across is, if you put Ford/type F in an old GM trans designed for dexron/type A, it would make it shift firmer. If you put GM/Type A/dexron fluid in a ford/type F trans, it would slip more. There was a difference in friction qualities in the fluids. What effect that has on t-20's, if any, I can't say. The band material they use today probably is different than 30 years ago. What about synthetics, anyone tried them? Hold up to heat better? |

Hi Roger- I have stuck with the factory recommended Type F in my 2000 Max II 18hp with very good results. Even after several severe rides my fluid still is reddish in color. The fluid added should be a total of 1 qt. including the 4 oz. of friction modifier. I installed a pipe nipple into the drain hole with a gas valve and a length of hose to reach the body drain hole. Pick up the front of the machine with the winch, open the valve and voila! an easy way to drain your trans. This works even if you don't speak French. I often leave it hang overnight for good measure. |

Hi Roger and John. I have tried using Amsoil synthetic tranny fluid last year. I didn't like it. Even with the GM additive I had quite a bit of chatter in the sticks. Didn't seem to matter whether the trans was cold or hot. I talked to a friend of mine who is in the tranny business about this and his opinon was that synthectic fluid in this application was too slippery. When I changed back to Dexron the chatter was gone.Like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Hey John sorry we couldn't make it Copper Ridge. I had everything ready to go. My A/C went out at home and the repair ended up going into late Friday. Plus we got about 4" of rain here Thursday night and flooded quite a few roads around me. I am definitely going to the Ledges. See you there. |

John, are you sure Voila is French? it sounds a little Italian to me. I had to use a modified version of the "Schwab T-20 drain "because I didn't have anything overhead to hook my winch to. I called in a piece of husbandry equipment but the system worked well. Off to Ohio, W. Philip Cox |
