98 maxIV thinkin of buying has 20 hp kohler very clean appear to b in good condition but its running maybe 15mph. and when u turn right its as if the chain is to tight, but i read on here somewhere where that might acually be the sound of the trans. could the trans b the reason for both these and how serious is this how much is this thing worth |

Troy, Disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic, dealer or sales person for a Max. I have bought an older machine and this is what I would do if I were to do it again. Some of this stuff might not be absolutly correct but it's what I would do. #1 Leave your emotions at home when you look at the machine! The imulse to buy one infront of you can be very strong! Could you describe what it feels like when the chain is too tight? I would look at the chain adjusters (small sprockets on top of the chains and in the front of the trans) check to see how far down they are in the adjustment. This will give you an idea how worn the chains are. Look carefully with a flashlight at all the drive sprocket teeth to see their condition. If they're not broken or deformed in the shape of waves they should be o.k. Check to see if the bearings have been greased regularly. These can be expensive and a PITA to change. See if the owner will let you float it to check for leaks. If not I would be concerned about the bearings. They might just need a shot of grease but this might indicate a lack of maintenance. Maintenance on these machines is very important and an on going process. If components are not taken care of, the costs to replace chains, sprockets, bearings can start to add up quickly. Trust me I know. I bought a used machine that ended up needing all of the above and I'm still not done. Please learn from my mistakes! I would try to do the above checks with all the wheels of the ground. One easy way is to drive the front up onto two car ramps side by side and lift the back with a car jack at the hitch. As far as the transmission take a look at the laterals (the steering levers) they should be even and a good distance back from the Dash i'm guessing 5 in. When properly adjusted they should move back the same amount and not more than about 10 inches at the top. If you buy the machine I would immediatly change the fluid in the Trans before you even go for a fun ride. Alot of people have ruined the trans buy having no fluid and doing a victoy ride as soon as they got home!! As far as the speed goes you probaly won't get more than that. how much wt in the machine driving conditions tire wear etc effect speed. These machines aren't made to go fast just go anywhere. I would base the value of the vehicle on the above and what they're going for online. Hope this helps Mike |

preciate the advice mike , it has all new chains and i havent checked to see how tight they r , but he said it used to run twice as fast, but he let it sit up for awhile |

I am just a novice-owner, but it could be the screw clamp on the throttle cable is loose and allowing the enitre cable to travel forward. Ask me how I "thought" of this one |
