I know that the greasable bearings are the standard. I was thinking that if we're replacing the bearings every year then wouldn't sealed bearings allow for better water resistance? I realize that a sealed unit wouldn't allow for service but if the greasable ones don't last what's the difference

Welcome to the club.
There are quite a few of us that no longer buy greasable bearings for all the above reasons.

If I grease my bearings regularly(with out over doing it),what kind of sevice can I expect to get out of them on my max 4?So far I don't have any water leaking thru or funny noises. The machine is used all year ,all weather conditions. About 210 hrs. on clock.Dread the day I have to pull those collars off to pull axles.Or am I over reacting?

I used to do preventive maintenance on a proof box and all the brgs. and gears were inside in the heat and humidity. We used a grease called pinion grease. It looked like black tar and was impervious to water. You couldnt wash it off your hands except with solvent. This kept the water out and made the bearings last longer.
Moisture dosent usually come into a Brg. thru the zerk fitting, they have a ball and spring
at the entrance. Greasing a brg can and does force out water though over greasing can force out the seals too. Sealed brgs can come with or without a zerk fitting. Brgs. also come in different load ratings ,say a one inch two bolt flange brg may be rated at 1000 lbs at 2ooo rpm
the next higher rating for the same brg might be 1500 lbs at 3000 rpm.Or a double row ball brg or roller brg or one made to withstand high temp.
I never could stand those locking collars there are many types of locking collars. Two set screw or squeze loc that pinches the inner bore on the shaft or the threaded collar that screws on to the brg pinching the inner bore down on the shaft. There are a lot of options to upgrade.

Dennis, I don,t think you need to be filled with dread. I certainly am not a mechanic but the factory gave me the right parts, lots of advice and written instructions with diagrams and I have replaced both rear axles on my Max 4. I replaced every bearing and chain on each axle while I had it out.Why not? But I think the inner bearing should last for years, low speed, dry, fairly clean environment etc. I had no trouble getting the set screw out of the bearing locking collar. Can,t say that about the set screw in the sprocket with the red locktite.but at least my rear axles are new spring clip models now. Let us know if you ever do lose a bearing but I hope it,s a long way off. W. Philip
