...Hustler in awesome condition. Tires aired right up, rolls freely, just needs an engine lobbed in thar (Kohler twin), battery and a good gunkin' out. Might need to flush tranny fluid. I dunno. Is there any kind of weird quark with these machines I need to know? Thanks.

hustlers are dang rugged machines,
you have a good find.
they are nice for many reasons,
they can acept realy big tires and air'd down theyd give a nice soft ride too.
good strong fraim.
auto battery.
need i say more?
i nice rugged machine is the best start in aatv'iing you could have

Mr. Berger, good to hear from you again. That was the first thing I noticed when I took the floor boards off. Everthing is WAY more beefed up. Dang rugged is right! The T-20 however seems like it might need service. The laterals are sorta loose and don't really have any resistance. Is this an easy fix?

well in my t-20 attex the laterels move quite smoothly,posably if my max springs were left off the laterels in it might move just as esaly.
they only need pull the bottom or top of a double wraped band to cause the self energizing feture thats built into the trans to engage.

After a wee bit of tinkering around it was determined that the laterals just need adjusting. The T-20 seems to work like it should. I ran into clutch problems as the one that was on there was not engaging properly and the clutch half that mounts to the ring gear was all bent and warped. I was lucky enough to find a Comet clutch for around $25. My question is, inside the clutch there are places to put what looks like weights. I can't remember how many are currently in there. I'm told the more that are in there the machine will climb a tree but has lousy top end and vise versa. But by how much? I would like the speedy top end but want some grunt at the same time ya' know? Should I half and half it to start with?

Give Comet a call. They sent me a copy of their book with all the engagment speeds of various combinations of those weights (called activator pucks) and springs

They're pretty helpful. I assume you have a 94C which has been in production for like 30 years and still going. Until you get the catalog, they can help you over the phone. With those part numbers, I ordered the pucks from Billy Norman (google for him). He's a pretty cool guy.

Comet Duster clutch. Got the engine to run this last Thursday and drove it about 50 ft until the engine sputtered out. WOOOOO HOOOO! Man, that was a kick in the ass! First time I really got to drive a skid steer. Amazing. Can't wait until it's really running. If the engine clutch is not closing like it's supposed to does that mean the shaft bolt is on too tight? Also what's the best way to wash minor debris out of that aluminum tank?

If the engine clutch isnt closing it might not be reving high enough. It could be a two stroke clutch or maybe it wasnt running good enought to close it. It doesnt close all the way intile it is revved high but should close enought to move above idle. It would depend on gearing and hp. Changing the springs or weights in the clutch would change engagement. I would get it running good before anything else.

The tank i assume is a gas tank. Only way I know is to remove it and empty it out. I have flushed them out with a garden hose but make sure it is dry before you use it.

Thanks Larry. Appreciate ya' taken the time to reply. I swabbed out the tank pretty good today. Found many a dead insect inside. A little gas made short work of that (heh heh). My starter motor burned out today. Weak. Just when I got all the wiring hooked up and a new spring on that bendix shaft. If the wires that connect the brushes inside are frayed would this make for a starter that will not engage? Jammed the engine up so it wouldn't turn. Unjammed after getting a bigger hammer. If so, easy fix, I hope. Wouldn't hafta hunt a new one down. Oh well..... I'll have to check with our battery shop tomorrow.

Now I'm afraid to ask this one.... The T-20 clutch side keeps moving in and out (not the clutch itself) with varying engine speed. I bring this up because it seems like the whole shaft moves an inch to and inch and a half in and out like the belt wants to pull the shaft out. How much play should there be if any? Drives straight and turns left and right fine.

Ok, Ok. Got the T-20 problem figured out..... Looks to be a bent mounting bracket that holds the transmission. I'm positive that's what caused the shaft to move like it does now. Out of alignment kind of deal. However the pain in the rear kohler twin is poopin out. Looks to be a blown head gasket. I am thinking this because fuel sprays out the exhaust manifold (which is welded from scrape pieces directly to the engine) and sometimes leaks like a sive right from the manifold/flexible exhaust tubing joint. Thought it was a carb problem. I'm kinda wishin it was. Really woulda liked to have that kohler twin in there..... Looks like I'll have to use the JLO Rockwell 292. Any thought's and/or suggestions sure would be appreciated.

Well, looks to be a whole bag of trouble (crap) and I'm probably gonna repeat some of what was mentioned above. The Kohler 440 twin is shot, the T-20 is shot, (grumble) and the transmission mount is shot. All the essential components to make the thing function. Mmmmmmm...... Guess that is what happens when you trade junk for junk. I'll get around to rebuilding the T-20 but as far as the mount I think what happened is the transmission clutch did not open up while the clutch on the engine was able to close up causing the whole works to be pulled outta wack. I can't think of anything else that would bend the frickin metal like that!!! This is me frustrated.....GRRRRRRR!!!! Shoulda bought a Max....... GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

pete sorry to here...
any older vehicle could fall apart, my maxII for instance has bin in pieces since last fall, today i got some welding done on a replacement fraim i hope to compleet in time to bring it to olean this july.
my fraim was so bent and broken, the afects of my 440cc and time, that i had to replace the fraim insted or fixing it.
the replacement is getting some beafing up pryor to re-asembly.

Yeah..... tis' a bummer but I've still got a Muscateer that hopefully will run with minor work. I thank you for the reassuring words..... Your right. After 20, 30 some years of sitting out in the elements and poor maintenance, things do tend to crap out. I think I'm just gonna take it to a machine shop and have new transmission mounts welded in. STRAIGHT ones this time. HA! Just don't know if it's really worth it.
