The old owner of my max IV installed a car battery in the machine. I know nothing about small engine electrical systems. The battery needs replaced, is it wise to install a car battery or is a regular atv battery smarter? By the way, what size came in them from the factory? |

Matt,I would go with the o.e.m.garden tractor battery.Orig. batt is a DEKA outdoors man series maint. free, with a little vent that seems to work good no spillage,365cca.300 at 0 degrees,I bought many and seem to do the job at all temps.$22 tax and all at the deka store(same place R.I. buys theres.Hey anybody who deals with Deka in that area ,they moved from Shanley to Southwestern blvd. |

yes the O.E.M batteries are cheep and fit nicely, wallmart might be cloaser to you and they have a good lawn tractor battery. but since the previous owner went threw the trouble to upgrade too an automotive battery you probly should stick wiith the auto type. especialy if you plan to hang a winch on the frount, hell you could hang one on the back too! some people find even with O.E.M bateries they need to hook up to a tricle charger to keep em healthy over long spans of non use. some people also rig there aatv's with small altenators to keep there systems fully charged. helpfull if you realy like halogen beams. i have even sean air compressors built into machines, sound systems, emergancy lights, 2 way raidios, cigeret lighters, skys the limmet, especialy if you have a bigg batterie! |

I am one of those who has extra electrontics type persons...I have just about everything Dave mentioned. What I did was purchased 2 OEM style batteries at the same time (date code) and installed them. I found a great place to install the second battery on the left rear wheel well inside the engine compartment. (using velcro and straps). Finally I did connect them in series and on the lower primary battery I did put a trickle charger to keep the batteries UP during long storage periods or extreme cold. To date NO problems or hassle and we have no problems running our electronic gadgets. Bill |

Matt, daves right a car batt. will work just watch how it vents so you don't have a mess.Idid something typ. to bill's idea.My back seat cushion is rigged just to snap off.Below it are two o.e.m. batts. pos. connected but just one neg cable which i alternate from time to time also have another ground cable with alligator clip so i can jump myself or gang up when or if i need more juice for my winch or if charging system fails i can get out on batt. capacity.I checked out other garden tractor batts. but none had the same CCA. |

Thanks all, I will probably just put a car battery back in. He already has the bracket for it and I am planning on putting a winch on soon.I just was'nt sure if the charging system could keep up. It is not charging at all anyway. Just was'nt sure if that was the reason or not? I also have a small jump box in my garage for those emergency starts. I've been using that to start it since my battery went (to lazy to pull). I am planning on keeping it with me on rides just in case. |

maybe the charging system will respond now with a new battery thats in good condition, once a battery is bad they miight ether overcharge or exept nothing at all. a batery minder tricle charger or a custom altenator are still options. |

maybe that was the reason why the previous owner installed a car battery,he just ran a total lose elec. system just recharge batt. after each use.what did your volt or amp gauge read?Don't forget it's your charing system that runs your acc. a bigger batt. will help but it will take your 18-20 amp. charging system for ever to bring that large batt.(group size determines reserve cap garden tractor batt. reserve so low not even posted, car batt. 120 min. ). up to full charge,a smaller batt. will recover quicker and will be in a full charge state by the time you shut down the machine.Watch your amp rating when you buy your winch, I got stuck and two argo's tried to winch me out ,both their winches stalled, they had some mean looking winches too! Here comes a max 2 with a small 1500 lb. winch and pulls me out single line pull with no stall at a steeper angle. |

Dennis, Thanks for all the advise. One question, by amp rating (for the winch) do you mean the draw on the battery. Is that what stalled the two argos? Or was it lack of power? My friend bought a 2000 lb winch for $100 and the thing is impressive. I'm not sure the brand, but that is what I was going to get. |

Right, the specs on the winch will tell you what the amp draw is for full cap..Say for example it takes 30amps for the winch to operate at full capacity if your charing system is only 20 amps it will start drawing on the battery right away wich is ok for a very short time.they had some big winches i'm guessing 3,000-3,500 lb so you know they were drawing more juice than thier charging system could put out, by the time they moved me 3-4ft. they used up thier batt. reserve.that 2,000 lb. is fine if the pull gets tough or you just don't want to over load your winch or charging system just use a double line pull.I have a 1,500 lb and tested it in the winter pulling my max 4 up a 30 degree grade in gear with tracks on, me in it with motor off for 8ft. double line pull, no stall and motor started right up afterwards.I also suggest running 8 gauge wire to your winch it most likely will come with 10 gauge.could the machines have had issues with batteries, wire gauge or somthing mech. maybe.the max 2 I would say had everything right. |

DENNIS, again thank you very much. my friend said to make sure to have the pully for the double line pull. I guess you just answered why? |

Those argo's that winched 3-4ft and quit had battery problems or something else. I've seen 3,000+ winches on them before with no problems. I prefer something smaller in weight and amp draw myself. I have a 2000 warn on my 8x8 from 1998, with a full spool single line pull it's weak on anything but a simple stuck. I use a pulley/snatch block to double the line and also get the spool diameter smaller, that'll pull anything I need. Pulley is off a come-along. I would want more than a garden tractor battery myself. My last argo battery was walmart, rated at 500 cranking amps, don't know what the reserve was. |

well there you go MATT,all your questions answered with some confermation. Now if you really want to get slick, reinforce your back hitch, make a bumper for the front with your backer plt. for the front (insde your machine) have a 1&7/8 trailer ball on each end,a winch plug recepticle front & rear.Mount your winch on 2'' tubing with a trailer hitch end and your ready to mount on front or rear as needed.Don't even need a fairlead ,the set up will follow the pull. |

Dennis, that is a smart idea. I was trying to think of an easy way to switch the winch front to rear. I think you have the ticket. Thanks for all the advise, you too Roger! I check this sight just about every day, and love to hear neve fabrications to machines. I am currently making a back rack just like the factory $500??? one. I will have less than $50 in it. It will also have a head rest for the back passengers for those rough rides. |

David, it is the full length of the front side of the rack. Plywood backer with 2in foam, covered with the same vinyl the seats are covered with. If it was not there, they would be hitting steel box tubing. Is there still a down side! Thanks for all input! |

well we dont want people hitting there heads on the steel tubeing, pading it sounds good, just calling it a headrest sounds bad. |
